Hey, I just wrapped up a head gasket job on my most recent acquisition, an 02 disco with 140k. Everything seems to have gone fine except that it doesn't quite idle right. When I first fire it up the revs move around a bit by themselves and it doesn't seem very smooth. It's ok when you get in on the open road though. Once and a while it even dies as I come to a stop. I originally had two codes, one indicating the MAF was off, the other being P1884 which looks like gibberish. I cleaned the MAF thoroughly with the right stuff and put it back together. No change except now I am only getting code P1884.

Do you have an OBD scanner that can read live data? I'll bet you aren't getting some sort of signal. TPS or road speed would be my guess. I had an issue with a 1999 D2 that couldn't get a good road speed signal from the SLABS.... it always thought it was moving down the road at 88mph. I cleaned some corrosion inside the ECM and it was ok after that.
A land rover specific computer would be able to tell you exactly which P1884 code it is, as there are 9 codes that all pop up in generic OBD2 as P1884.

Huh. No unfortunately I don't have the scanner that does live data. Can the inertia switch cause this? mine was broken off and laying down on the inner wing.
