Code Reader Devices

I've got a Disco II and am wondering what hardware/software the group recommends to read codes, access the ECU, onboard memory, etc?

I've seen the Rovacom software/hardware setup, but there is no way I'm going to spend that kind of money. I gathered from the posts that DIs have some kind of on-board device that shows codes, but I've never heard of such a thing on a DII.

Looking forward to everyone's thoughts on this - thanks in advance.

I think both the DI and the DII use the same system, OBD-II. I am also looking for a reader myself and found different ones at parts stores and Sears. They range in price from $84-160. This is not much help but that is as far as I am. I would look for one that gives a clear read out and not alot of other stuff on the display. Other than that I think they are probably all about the same and depeneds on how much you want to spend. The higher priced ones, I would think are going to be more for the full-on mechanic not the shade-tree mechanic.

I would recommend the Eqqus Innova 3100 http://www.iequus.com/item.asp?cid=10&pid=3100

It is an industry standard reader and it is tough. I used to take this on the road with me everywhere and had dropped it many times on the pavement, on the rocks and once down an imbankment. I paid $80 for it off of eBay 2 years ago but the price for new retail ones are now about the same (like at Autozone or Napa). It is well worth the extra $$ to get this model. You can also check the code definitions off of their site and they have LR specific code definitions.

And yes, OBD II is in all vehicles 96 and newer. The plug for D1s is under the driver side dash right above the gas pedal and similar location on the D2 I believe. Just plug it in and read codes (and then clear them if you want - I usually did that even if the source of the code wasn't fixed - that way I could see if it happened again and in what intervals).

Good luck!

I purchased the Eqqus Innova 3100 (above thread) from Kragen's auto for 100 bucks. Reads and clears codes...easy to use too. Small enough to store in your glove box.

Michael - thanks the Autoenginuity site is more what I'm after (as I do have a laptop at my disposal). I'll look into that some more. I wish it was able to make modifications to the ECU, without that it sounds pretty similar to the generic readers, but with nicer graphics.
