Hi - I am a new member, own a 2001 Disco with 100,000 miles.

My motivation to register - one very hot day 2 weeks ago the Disco quit at a stop light. SES light came on. Thinking the A/C was taxing, I turned it off. With persistance got the engine started. Now have had several times where the car won't start after being parked for about 20 minutes. Either I wait 40 minutes or I turn the A/C off (or both). I have the vacuum cleaner whine as mentioned on several posts. I would rather not have it even if it is normal.

I am studying the RAVE and posts on this site and will be checking hoses and SAI pump. Thankfully the RAVE has lots of pictures because I don't know what anything is.

Thought I'd start this thread to fish for comments.

I have searched the threads and will be looking for the obvious vacuum leaks (if that doesn't work will have to go to less obvious leaks). I may check the throttle body gasket.

I will also check the fuses and relays.

After searching more threads, checking vacuum lines, etc. I found an extremely loose vacuum line on the vacuum reservoir. I followed the directions below, added electrical tape cut to width around the male connection and slid the female on. It fits snug. I plan to buy a code reader so i can clear codes and see what comes back.

(Problem solved. Just as you said, the vacuum line was disconnected from the resevoir on the right. Thanks!

thanks guys i just had the same exact problem........vacuum line was disconnected from the resevoir on the right.

the right angle female connection was enlarged and would not fit well over the male connection. is there a replacement angle connection? i wrapped tape around the male connection and slide the female on, worked fine.)

My husband, his brother, and his favorite mechanic feel this is only electrical and not vacuum hoses, but they have not been reading any of this material.

I think it is possible i will have to replace the SAI pump. I have not checked for stuck valve but that would be next and I would try a member's earlier post -

"my valve was not moving even w/ vacum applied. i cleaned it up and soaked it in aero-kroil, cleaned it again and got it to free up and move nicely. no more problems that was 3 years ago."

Still looking for feedback.

what vacuum line are you referring to? was it the canister that leads to the SAI duct work? if you are referring to those lines, and the rubber elbow connections, just get one at the dealer. I dont know if it is a part, but I had to get one because it was doing just as you say off one of my SAI pumps.

On the Vacuum Reservoir it is the line from the vacuum port to the intake manifold (one-way valve end)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Still having issues. Truck died at a stop light. Turned off the A/C and got it started.
I plan to try CRC MAF cleaner today.

you have 2 issues........

the 14 number faults are either the sai vac valves near the valve covers are stuck open or the electric valve for the sai is faulty..follow the air harness and you will find the 2 vac valves and then the elec valve....if it were me i would change all of them becuse either the vac valves fail and cause the elec valve to fail or vice versa

the 1171 1174 are mass air flow sensor faults.....you can try to clean with elec cleaner the sensor and also make sure the air box is secured correctly if it is not the unmeter air and dirty air will contaminate the mafs

good luck

I used CRC MAF cleaner on my MAF sensor. Used my new ABDII code reader to clear codes. Truck is running smooth and the SES light has not returned.
