Coils for disco 1

Just bought a 1996 disco about two months ago with 86,000 miles. I used to have a 75 bronco with 4.56 gears, 351w, lockers, ad 5.5 inches of lift with 35s. It is a bit different coming from a tin can to the disco. I want to lift the disco about 2-3 inches and use flares to stuff 35s on it. I want to keep the center of gravity low. Will coils from a tj, a cherokee, a bronco, or something else fit on my discovery? Has anyone put non rover coils on their rover?

the point is he is unfamilar with disco's so he wants to work with stuff he has expierience with instead of spending a little time and learning the best way to do things.

my advice is ask how to achieve what you want, as Gil just suggested there are disco coils that will do what you want with a lot of cutting.

your not the first guy to come from other brands to rovers and dont believe what the jeeper guys tell you that if you want a sweet capable rover you will have to fab everything yourself...its not at all true.

alex shubow ran 35's with 2" of spring lift for a long time...its not that complicated

stock FJ 80 coils will work and should give you 3 inches of lift... all you have to do is flip the spring plates.. just a though...

wiht a 3 inch lift and a little trimming you can clear 35s no problem, and it will still be fine with the COG. I would suggest buying the rovertym 3 inch springs though, you will be very happy, and their fairly cheap.

A set of used coils from common vehicles, such as a jeep, would be cheaper....for the FJ 80 coils all you have to do is flip the spring plates?

If you're lookin' to go cheap, then do the discoweb "cheap bastard" lift. Move those rear coils to the front for ~2 inches of lift, and just buy one set of OME springs for the rear.. You can buy a set of alum. spacers on eBAY for cheap which will lift you all the way around ~2 inches.. but soft crappy OEM springs on top of spacers gives me bad thoughts..
FWIW, I've learned over the years of Rover ownership, that cheapest routes eventually lead to more expensive ones.. so just do it right the first time.. don't settle.

Its not that I want the cheapest coils possible, I am just checking out all the possibilities before hand. I definitely don't want to use spacers either.

spacers of 1 or 2 inches combined with larger springs is pretty common on D1's and present no issues and comes down to personal preference.

This is a very true quote! Please listen to this man... If you want 35's without complication... two options IMHO, 2" RTE springs, and 2" body lift. Or 3" RTE springs, and a little trimming. Big difference between fitting 35's under; and having them work properly at full stuff articulation. Welcome to the Rover community. Good Luck.

So, it seems as though I should get some 2-3 RTE or OME coils and some fender flares (but which ones ecr's or some off a disco 2).....but, back to the fj80 coils, I can get four stock coils from an fj80 for $80.... If anyone has some used RTE or OME 2-3 inch coils let me know... I am a broke graduate student.....

I am not getting these coils, well at least not yet:D , I just have some questions about using these coils...will they lift my rover evenly, because I dont want the rear higher than the front? If one were to get these fj80, coils the only extra thing needed to install the coils, is to flip the spring plates?

Now lets sayI lift my rover 2-3 inches, what about the driveshaft? Can I use the front and rear shafts off a disco 2 and the pinion flange? Or can I only use the rear shaft off the disco 2? Are there spacers that can e used like on suzuki samurais?

why spend 300 to 400 dollars on a set of coils when a set of 4 xj front coils can be had at the boneyard for $20?

one thing that always burns me out about you 'rover' guys is your kyleness and inability to imagine.

if "being done with it" were the point, then just run your stock crappy rover and miss out on fun trails.

i will never be "done with it", tinkering is the point of the hobby.

pardon my pirate attitude, but i will be experimenting with junk yard coils soon too. so to the original poster, don't let those that say it can't be done get in the way of those doing it.:banghead:

I really think you need to spend some time here reading...everything you have asked has been talked about hundreds of times

New guy here obviously BUT this is shitty Fking attitude man. WHAT IF I dont have 3 FING hours to sit here and read every FKING thread and absorb all i can in 1 sitting?. In the time it took you to think of something Dickish to say to this guy you could have either A. Given a knowledgable answer to help him out or B. Just shut the FUC* up and move on. The old term, "if ya dont have anything nice to say then dont say anything at all" applies here.

Seriously WHY spend 5-700 bucks on OME or Rovertyme springs when you CAN use FJ80 coils and GET THE SAME RESULT?. I prefer to be resourceful and tinker around a little personally and see what works and what doesnt. I ALSO have 4 kids and if I can spend 50.00 on FJ80 coils and lift my Disco and GO WHERE EVERYONE ELSE GOES with there expensive ass "Rover Specific Springs" then thats the route I'm taking. Really I'm not an asshole, nor do I like to start fights but GODDAMN I'm tired of reading posts that in NO WAY help the other guy and is an opinion only. YA YA YA search first search first, I get it but come on.

I know atleast 3 guys with FJ80 coils on their Discos and they ride/wheel great. The 2 other guys I personally know have all riden in these FJ80 coiled Disco's. They all have dropped 700 bucks on their "Rover Specific" coils and ALL have said "damn, wish i woulda known that trick before I dropped 700 bucks". They say this because the ride, the articulation etc etc is about damn near the SAME. So go ahead, spend your money anyway you want, just dont shit on the guys who want to do things a little differently. I can understand IF safety issues were involved here but they are not.

No worries man. I am glad you did though because I had never heard of using FJ80 coils. I am now thinking about this myself, damn it maybe you shouldn't have searched! Now I gotta go digging through the junkyard again :)
