Take for instance my Harbor freight 1/4" steel wire come along, rated at a breaking point of 8k pounds. In real life, how much is your average bear able to pull with this thing? Have you been bogged down to the point that you can't even turn the thing?

Lets just say in real life.......... I don't want to be that close and "in-line" with any cum-a-long remotely close to it's breaking point.

8K pounds on a china made 1/4 inch steel cable; or more importantly its hooks - NO.

They are good for holding the truck from sliding sideways or something, or adding some tension so you don't slide *back* into a hole. But actually pulling yourself out.... not really. There are some *good* ones but they cost as much as a winch so even if math is not your strong subject you'd probably be able to see the better idea here. ;)

Exactly the one I was thinking of. Very nice machines.... but pricey. Handy though and if you need something portable they really are the only one to buy.

Price out the multi-ton units  :eek3:

You do get what you pay for with them however.

I had one a few years ago that I got used off Craigslist - sold it to a friend with the option to "borrow" if i ever needed it.

A come along will not ever take the place of a real winch if that's what you're getting at. They are handy to pull from the roof rack or cage to prevent a rollover.

As others have previously stated, I do not want to tell you what to do.. but you did ask. and out of concern for your welfare and wallet , I will reply.
I have been a Millwright by trade for the extent of my life and no matter the enormous size of the load , we always err on the side of caution. The same holds true for vehicular recovery..... Always think about what it takes to get home in one piece and tell the story to your Grandchildren.
I would suggest ebay on a budget.. buy Yale or C&M used.. and trust the American made will get you home.. Buy 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle.
