I had a 99 Tacoma 4x4/SB with the 2.7 I-4 and the thing was indestructable. 90,000 miles of driving with many off-road trips, wet dogs, mountain bikes and scuba tanks. Probably the best engineered vehicle I've ever owned. It was a regular cab, which was the only reason I traded it for the DiscoII....family needs, you know. I miss it...especially the home-made bedliner, compliments of souvenir stickers from my travels. :(

I wouldn't hesitate to recomend any Taco to anybody for any reason.

I have no experience with the 04 and older Tacomas, but they are supposed to be extremely reliable and capable. I just traded my 03 DII for an 05 double cab Tacoma 4x4 and I'm very impressed with it. With any luck, I'll run across a soccer mom DI or a good D90 this fall for a project vehicle.

I think the new ones look like shitk, they really runined a great truck, much like what LR is doing to our machines. my only gripe with 4 door is that they are all auto boxes. Toyota are one of the best trucks on the road.

Toyota's are sweet trucks, definately what I would get if I didn't have a Rover.

You will find that the Tacoma is small and not nearly as comfortable as the Disco. Also, my dad has a Tundra 4-door, while that is larger than the Disco, it is not nearly as comfortable, you will feel like you are driving a bus -- or like the old lady behind the steering wheel. The window levels are much higher than the Disco, you have very bad vision while in the truck. Also, the gas pedal is much more difficult to deal with while off-road.

These are opinions, but I have driven both the Tundra and the Disco and the Land Cruiser extensively. The Toyotas are very good trucks, good off road, but not nearly as good for the driver.

Like James said, Definately go Toyota. My father owns a Tacoma Pre-Runner and has not had a single problem since ownership. He hauls wood, takes it off-road, and uses it as a daily commuter. It's one tough truck.

When Myra was born, I bought the wife a 2004 4Runner. The vehicle is smooth; the 6 cyl engine is well powered, and most of all it carries the rep of Toyota reliabilty.

Steve Young made a post somewhere else on this board about buying a Japanese car without a soul. My response to that is, I would sell my soul for reliabilty :)
