Cracked Timing gear

I replaced my oil pump and timing chain went to put my crank shaft pulley on and I’d didn’t go all the way in. So I thought I could turn it a little by hand and get the oil pump gear to slide back and get the pulley on. Well that didn’t go as planned. It wouldn’t turn and I may have tried a little to hard and the big gear broke. Now I’m starting over.
Since everything is new would I be good on just replacing the big gear and is there a trick to getting the oil pump gears in place?

Finding quality Rover parts is starting to ruin my Landy experience. Not sur we what you did but that shouldn’t not have happened unless you were smacking it with a good sized hammer. At least that didn’t happen when it was running.

Didn’t hit it.

A few weeks ago i was talking to Clint at TWS about cam gears coming in cracked or breaking. they are the cheapest crap made and there is no options for a better part. Really only 1 manufacturer making them. Tuesday night i was setting valve lash on the roller rockers and the detent snapped off the cam gear. I was so mad and then next morning sent Clint a picture of the broken one noting another one failed. I have seen a ton of them over the last year. Well he had ran with our last conversation and sent me a picture of a billet timing set he had made and is making more, both gems and bosch gears. Get a hold of him and get one on order. They are not cheap but I dont care. Im working on a 30,000$ full roller 4.6 and could care less what it costs. Hate to have some cheap part destroy the whole build.

What about using the old gears with a new chain?
It’s got about 203k on it. As far as I can tell they looked good but this is my first experience with them. I’m not sure about how they wear.

I would be hard-pressed to think the gear just cracked from you trying to turn it by hand...don't care how big you are you ain't that strong.
Most likely your timing is off and you got something jammed against something else internally especially if you still have the heads/valve train installed.
Recheck your junk.

Timing marks were lined up and it rotated before I put the cover on. My guess is the oil pump bound up because the small ring wasn’t where it needed to be and that big gear was the weak link.

Wow, that is terrible. Glad I have some new sets purchased years ago. Rarely does my hoarding disease pay dividends, but…

On this note, could you use an old Buick set? Note the one listed as high performance. What is the difference between CUX and GEMS gear sets? I am fairly confident this one would work on a CUX engine.

How would one know for certain? At that price it’s worth it to get it and compare.
Is that Rock Auto?

Yep, RockAuto. I was hoping someone that knows for certain what the difference is would chime in. You could get it and compare. You have to pay return shipping if you get it from RockAuto but it would be less than $10 i would assume.

I wonder if they could cross reference the part number or if a local parts store could?
Saw this one online.

I think this was my main culprit. When I put the cover on this slid out and kept the crank pulley from going all the way in. This one is ruined won’t go into the middle gear in the pump.

14CUX upper gear is nylon and won't work on GEMS or Bosch. Gems won't work on Bosch and vice versus. GEMS/Bosch have different "reference" marks for the cam sensor.
Anything 14CUX I'll use a double roller steel gear set.

Did any of you pay attention to my post? They are 1 coming with cracks in them out of the box and 2 breaking with almost no force on them. There is no better part and no the 215 CUX set does not work because the gems bosch does not have a distributor to drive. its completley different. TWS is making them currently and should be available starting this week. I already have a set on order since mine broke just setting valve lash.

“Did any of you pay attention to my post?”

Lol, I didn’t and I’m sure no one else was questioning your omnipotence of all things LR timing gears. (intent is a good natured dig)

I was a bit optimistic as the “high performance“ one stated “without integral distributor drive gear.” That is a bit surprising as everything it shows fitting has a distributor. However, I will admit I maybe misunderstanding that statement.

In my years of owning / repairing old British cars I have stumbled upon many parts that were not listed for their applications but worked perfectly.

I always look for stuff like that even with this. Problem is the lines were so short lived, gems 1996-1998 and bosch 1999-2004 and aftermarket never really picked them up. A lot of parts were good enough for everyone until they are not. Who is building high power Late RV8s? I had a real hard time finding a gems manual flywheel for a year i looked and looked. Finally found a guy in the uk that would make me one. I will go to long ends to find good parts at no consideration of expense. I learned my lesson, the twin turbo engine is going to be long nose. I actually have 4 billet double roller timing sets for those :) Once annabelle is up and running i will start on that stupid build.
