Cracked Windshield & Mantec Snorkel

Hey guys... my 99D1 failed NJ State inspection because of a hairline crack in the windshield. I went to a local auto glass shop and the guy said:

Guy: "I'm afraid we can't work on your truck because your EXHAUST is on the way when we take the windshield"
Me: " How the hell is that possible?"
Guy: "That black thing along the windshield frame, isn't that your exhaust?"
Me: "Oh, yes, you're right."
Guy: "If you take that thing out and bring it back here, then we'll work on it"

So my question is, is he full of it or is he for real? I don't think the Mantec Snorkel is on the way and am also too lazy too uninstall it so they can put a new windshield. Should I look into other shops? Anyone have a similar experience? Any advice is appreciated... Thanks!

Damn, failed for a hairline crack??
Everyone out here has several cracks in their windshield,,,it's so damn dusty & small-rocky. I stopped fixing mine a few years back. Vehicle inspections,,,,that's one thing I do not miss about the Northeast.

I'm sorry you have to put up w/ that.

As any woman would tell ya, a guy who doesn't know an intake from an exhaust isn't worth his salt.

Funny you mentioned that... that crack actually started life as a little chip that I got from CO on my drive back to NJ. Being the lazy bastard that I am, I let it go and now it spans more than halfway my windshield. We have 2-year inspection span here in NJ and I got that in '03 so I really never had a need to fix it before now.

I will try other places but if the major consensus is to take it off, then I might have to get off my lazy ass and take it off. Thanks for the replies.

I didn't realize that since I don't have one yet, a strike against I guess. But I still want a Mantec, they look so much nicer in my opinion.

If your snorkel runs up the a pillar, it will be in the way because those trim pieces have to come off. Is it attached to the pillar?.....

It is NOT attached to A-pillar but runs up alongside of it. The only attachment it has is on the front corner edge of the gutter, where a tab from the snorkel's shaft is screwed on to the gutter's lip.

I just found this link on ECR's Discotech Project and it shows what looks like the removal and installation of the windshield while the Mantec snorkel is on. (Check out the last four pictures in the bottom).
