Crank Pully Seal

Guys and Gals,

97 D1 w/ 77,000 miles. I have had the crank seal replaced twice in the last 3 years and it has begun to leak again! Each time the stealership has replaced w/ OE seal.

My question is 2fold: 1. Is there a better seal that can be used, 2. How difficult of a procedure is it to do, any special tools/tricks? I figure I should learn to do the repair if it is going to keep going out!

Thanks. Sean

Sounds like your crank pulley itself needs replacing. They can develope a groove that will eat away at seals

They make a sleeve to fit over top of the crank shaft. It will cover over the grove ground into the shaft.....It's 12.00 at aluminumv8.com.

The seal is an easy fit. You remove the belt, one bolt on the pulley, and remove the pulley. Remove the seal, and replace... 20 minutes, max.

Finally got around to calling Dan @ D&D Fab (Aluminum V8) and he told me that the sleeve will not fit the Rover engine... Said I would need to get a new Harmonic balancer?

Has anyone fit a Speedi Sleeve for this application??

Yeah he told me the same thing - his sleeve does not fit. I have a seal and new timing chain/gears on the shelf waiting to install them, I'd be interested to hear about where to find a sleeve as well.

One alternative would be to have someone turn the pulley on a lathe but I would rather go the sleeve route - seems that a slightly larger shaft would seal better than a slightly smaller shaft.
