Crappy gas mileage?!

I recently (3 months ago) replaced air filter with K and N (non-disposable) and put in new plugs- the recommended set was platinum bosch. Why is my mileage worse than ever? No mistiming, misfires or power problems and no changes elsewhere! And it's not b/c I am using air conditioning b/c I haven't started that up much yet! Any ideas? I get about 14.5miles/gallon! Was getting aobut 15.8 previous. Both of these suck. Are these plugs lousy? What else can I do. I also seafoamed the engine and fuel once about 5000 miles ago. Stuff is great. Also just replaced my radiator which had a hole/leak. With all this new stuff I thought I'd be getting 17/gallon at worst!

I would kill to get 15mpg. For as long as I can remember my Disco 1 has gotten right around 12mpg. And that is with new plugs, new oil and K$N. I recently started adding 1oz of pure acetone for every 5 gallons and my last two tanks have gone up to 13.7 mpg. Not too impressive but better than I have ever gotten before. Before you start saying how bad acetone is for your car just consider what California already adds to there gas, MTBE, Xylene etc. MTBE has been proven to eat through fuel lines. Acetone is "suposed to" reduce surface tension and make combustion more eficient. I have not found any info from anyone that has had problems doing this. It may be snake oil but I am going to give it a shot for a few more tanks and then compare straight gas. Oh, I have been purposefully driving harde than usual and not babying it. Lots of stop and go LA traffic and mountain driving.

When I bought my new 98' the sticker said 12 and 18 I think you doing good! These full time heavy vehicles have always been known to get poor mileage. I see your point though it should not have gotten worse.

I think I get about 12 or so- but I'm kinda hard on the throttle.

I believe without any doubt that the single biggest cause of lost MPG in these tanks is fouled/clogged injectors.

I have now run 2 sets of these injectors on the flow bench . first off they are very crappy old style injectors. the spray patern is one that was used by BMW in the 80's. the concept was to have a heavy center stream with a misting halo around that. the problem comes from the halo orrifices are very small and tend to clog very easily.

also the center heavy stream when it gets clogged it tends to shoot sideways . this causes the majority of fuel to to run to one side of the inlet chamber and not atomize. this causes uneven fuel burn and a loss of MPG and power. because of the nature of closed loop systems this will not throw a code in most cases.

With Al babayan's injectors he had dropped to I believe about 8MPG before we did them. after we backflushed the set and replaced the 2 worst injectors his truck jumped up to I believe around 14MPG or so.

the injectors on my D1 were just as bad as AL's and I was getting about 9MPG after doing them I am getting about 14.5 MPG with MT's and a roof rack:)

I am right now working on finding a true replacement injector with a buddy of mine. the ones we have tested that some people are putting in ...such as the ones 5-0 motorsports sells are about 20% rich at WOT. because most fuel systems only work in closed loop at partial throttle this becomes a problem. at heavy loads at slow speeds such as off-road this will be even more of a problem. once I find just the right injector I will report back .

the other reason for a new injector is the stock ones cost about $150 each where most others can be had for $25-$50 each.

If you replaced plugs but have stock plugwires maybe they were weakened when installing the new plugs?

14-15mpg seems pretty reasonable to me.

I get 13 mpg running 265/75/16's. I, too, have the platinum +4 plugs - they come gapped so you should not have to touch them. Pugsly has a good point - are you running stock wires with those plugs? Try the magnecore ones. They are a good match for those Bosch plugs. Some guys like them, some don't, just buy 'em and see for yourself. Also, consider putting in a high flow muffler or glass pack and getting rid of the rear resonator. I picked up an extra mpg when I did that.

no you cant back flush them at home... they need to be put on a liquid flow bench plugged in and activated then the cleaning solvent is flushed through the injector to clean them.

then they are tested and calibrated for both volume and patern.

Musky,

What kind of shop can do this? My regular mechanic or the dealer?

Thanks,
Michael

funny thing, both K&N filter and Bosch platinum plugs are on my "no-no" list. Prime examples that spending more than necessary on replacement parts does not yield any performance benefits.

14.5 is normal. My D1 gets about 17mpg on the highway at sustained ~70 mph, but barely 13.5 in town.

Musky, I read in a post several months ago about someone who put Ford F150 yellow injectors in his Disco. He bought them off ebay and said it was a direct replacement. I will try and find the info and post back here. I also printed it out so I would have it in case this site went down. Anyway, I will see what I can find.

Hughes, put the old plugs back in and see what it does. If no change put the old air filter back in and go from there. If there is still no change I would put the new stuff back in and get the new wires like posted above. Not sure but HTH.

Sounds like you are doing better than me.
Since Dec of 2003 I have kept track of a little over 23K miles of driving in my D1 with 245/75 mud tires. Total on-road fuel mileage to date: 13.21 mpg.
