Eric, we sell these engines to people who are doing as new rebuilds, normally its the defender crowd, but we have just sold a crate TD5 for £7250 to a chap in Florida for a D2 complete rebuild.

We have take out repower kits for the D1 for £2850.00 plus shipping for the day to day disco crowd!

If that is the logic you follow, why don't you drive a Jeep?
It is not quite the same logic.
A IV-gen 5.3-liter Vortec with 6L80E will likely boost a D1's gas mileage to 16-17 from 12-14, for the same amount of coin (maybe slightly more, depending on the exchange rate), including clean lift, all parts, and installation labor.
For this, you get nearly three times horsepower and torque (higher at idle than 300tdi at the peak), and a fully street legal vehicle in 50 states.

I've nearly ran out of gas following Chris Snell in Nevada and Idaho - but I didn't, and I didn't touch a spare 5-gallon can. I could have had three or four cans, and while it would still not match 300tdi range, it would easily keep me going for a long while. The only remote purpose for a TDI conversion (besides cool factor) is taking a truck for a long trip outside of the U.S.

Two logical reasons for putting a diesel in your Rover: reliability or range. It's easier and/or cheaper to buy a newer Rover, fix up the existing one, or buy some gas cans.

Don't see what Jeep has to do with it

I'm just curious, have either of you owned a 300 Tdi? I never felt my stock 300 Tdi 110 was underpowered. I really liked that it wouldn't get bogged down in the hills (East coast) where every almost V8 Land Rover I have owned does. My 300 Tdi was not more reliable that the V8's I have had, but that's just my personal experience with one motor.

A Jeep is practical, Land Rovers are not.

I've talked to very few 300tdi converts that aren't happy. I'm very happy with mine, I'm about to hit 30k miles since the conversion, and the only issue was a defective genuine lower radiator hose. I often run around 25 to the gallon on 33" km2s, and it's the perfect trail setup.

Reliability indeed. There is exactly one critical wire running to my motor and it can be bypassed or run off some Jerry-rigged batteries. It runs cool as a cucumber in the hot desert and is super simple to work on. Julian's price isn't bad but I have to wonder where he is using Genuine vs (something else) in those ancillaries.

Yeah but for the hp and parts availability of a ls motor, you really need to look at both carefully

Until you drive a ls powered truck, you just won't understand...

And 22mpg with a th400 behind a lq4 powered 109 hybrid...towing a trailer

I'm definitely not going to be the one saying that a tdi is better than an LS. Ease of conversion for sure, fuel consumption, tdi is better, but power, reliability, parts availability go to the LS.

A Jeep is practical, Land Rovers are not.

I guess it depends on what you consider practical. It's all a mater of opinion. I think Jeeps are some of the most impractical vehicles out there (Not including the full body SUV's). Why anybody would own one for anything other than a trail truck is beyond my understanding. But then I feel the same way about a Defender.

Very nice. BTW I fixed Dominic's entry in the banned sellers list for you. I made a mistake when I put the name of DP's "company" in there. It's fixed now.

For the sake of potential purchasers, can you post pics of the motor w/o sound deadening cover as a buyer can expect theirs to look?
