The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has granted Cross Lander USA an airbag exemption until May 2008. The law was waived because the company was able to prove "substanial economic hardship" if it attempted to meet the safety standard. The company will be required to put a warning sticker in vehicles to alert buyers. The company will be allowed to sell up to 9,000 vehicles during the exemption. This information was found in today's Wall Street Journal section D, page 6.

Well considering Ford's financial position and the signficant layoffs and plant closing to be announced on Jan 23rd, maybe Land Rover can claim the same. I'd bet they would sell every one of those airbaq less Defenders.

"substanial economic hardship" Wouldn't crosslander actually have to sell one in the US to even claim that?

yeah, I want to buy a second rate copy of a vehicle that originally sucked from a company who likely can't afford to honor the warranty because of "economic hardship"

Steve, ARO is not a copy of Land Rover. In fact, they may predate Land Rover, historically, or be started up at about the same time, and based on a different vehicle.

This is not to say that ARO makes kick-ass quality vehicles, by any means.

I was thinking the same thing, Peter.... I bet Mike is thinking of Santana developing out of Rover...

Right, Mike?

Dammitt James....I'm going to have to rub one out after looking at those pics.

I'd like to see the Xlander...Seems cool, as long as it's not "cheap" looking.

I went to the web site and it has 7.5" of ground clearance? Where the hell are you going to go with that? It seems to me that in order for it to be viable for the "offroad" market then the aftermarket suppliers need to get onboard with lifts, winch buckets, HD axles, ect. I hope they do well though. If I have to look at another 4wd SUV rollin on 22's I'm gonna puke..especially if the video is playing in the drivers head rest with no one in the rear seats!!

I guess what I was trying to say was that you would need more than that and with limited after market support the options are limited.
