I am thinking of crafting my own crossbars for my 04 D2. I sketched my own plans using pvc, but I am curious if anyone has tried this and if so wanna share with me how you did it? Thanks -

I just got a pair of the Thule high foot bars....not too expensive and they do the job right...bars fit OVER the "pipes"

jeez....no I think I paid about $200 from Atlantic British....the genuine bars ar not flat across the car either so would be a pain to mount a roof box to...the Thule's fit very securely in the roof gutters and will take up to 150lbs....which is more than enough top weight!

PVC?:ack:

You can use the Thule 450 Crossroads with your factory roof rails, they'll fit even over the bigger rails of the '04. Then add the LB65, or LB 50 load bars.

Or, as suggested the Thule 953 Super High Foot gutter mount is better IMO. You have more options to position the load over the vehicle. Combine these with the LB65 load bars and you're set.

They sell black pvc, and I think I could make it look stock, but for the hassle, Thule sounds like a better option...I was expecting the tube to have a lot of movement due to attaching a long tube to such a narrow point (crossbars). I like that the Thule can be positioned in different points. Thanks --

I still think $200 for a roof rack is completely and utterly ridiculous. $200 for 2 little things that grab onto the roof rails and then 2 cross bars.

oh well, its probably what I will end up doing anyways...

Oh yea, don't get the giant 65" cross bars, get the 50" or w/e thule says to get. When the cross bars are wider than the car they look absolutely horrendous and makes your car look retarded.

Is there a correlation between length of bar and load?
I don't want the long crossbars...they DO look retarded and they will just snag branches, etc.

Really?.....Or, buy the LB50's and FEEL retarded when you don't have enough room on top, or enough bar extending from the side to lash down the load.

Buy the LB65..you can always cut them down in length if you want to, but you can't make the LB50's longer:cool:

I'm a Thule dealer and D2 owner...I've been through this a time or two before.

Too long and they can be a liabililty on tight trails though.

$200 too expensive? List is $169 and you can probably pick up some used ones pretty cheap.

Basically I just want to use my $130 thule ski rack on my factory disco rack without having to spend a lot. I'll probably figure something out when the time comes. the thule mounting brackets for the ski rack are the right shape but a few mm too big so it slides across the bars.

If you have either the Thule 724, 725, or 726 ski rack (the Universal Flat Top ski/snowboard rack), the Fat Mouth adaptor should work:

It's around $40 and should work, although I don't have any first hand experience fitting one to the Disco factory cross bars.....

I've got a 2"x2" vertical post welded to my RTE front bumper that I attached the swingarm of my previously hitched-mounted thule bike rack. It holds 4 bikes and swings down when not in use. I did it because it's a hassle to essentially give up access to the rear door when bikes are on the rack, and when these trucks are lifted even a little, it can be a PITA to mount stuff on the roof.

It's out of the normal box, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to rig up something to do the same thing with skis ... just a thought for those with aftermarket bumpers ...

Here are some photos of my bike rack ... This feels like a semi-hijack, so I apologize, but if it gives someone ideas for how to carry other stuff, it's all good ...

And check out my rug rat in one shot trying to bust off my rear view mirror while I'm taking pics ... :)

A $10.00 option, that looks factory. It is time consuming but I think it would look better then anything you could buy at this time.

1st- measure the width between your factory bars.
2nd - go to Home depot and buy 1" aluminum pipes that are 4" longer then width of your factory bars
3rd- prime and paint flat black to match your factory bars.
4th ? remove your factory bars
5th ? drill two 1" holes on the inside of each factory bar (just on the inside and not all the way through)
6th ? reinstall one of your factory bars.
7th ? slide the 1" poles in the holes you drilled.
8th - reinstall the other factory bar while slipping the poles into it.

With the poles being 3" longer than the width of your factory bars you will have a 2" overlap each side for support and that will keep them from coming undone.

If you have factory bars on a 2003 or earlier then you will need to cut your poles 2" longer then what you measure for the width and it will give you 1" on each side for support.

If you have questions I can draw you a picture of what I am talking about.

That's a good idea. What about silicone to seal the cross bars? I wonder if moisture would build up in there.

That looks pretty cool. Like you mentioned, it's always a pain when the bikes are on the back, it's a pain when they're on top too. My bike is inside the D2 today as I needed to run some errands after riding and never feel comfortable leaving a high $$ bike on a car rack for very long - even if it's locked.

My rug rats are just starting to ride with me now..it's a blast!

Yea I looked at those, they look too big.

I don't have one in stock (not the season), but if you haven't come up with anything by ski season, PM me and I'll UPS you the FM-1, if it works you can keep it if not you can send it back.

Or, you could probably get someone to fab up some brackets that would work, couldn't be too tough. I'm going to have to do that for my Thule fairing, the Thule brackets don't provide a very good fit..I can't get the fairing to contour the way I would like it to.
