Ok, my terminology is going to suck, but if this makes sense to you, please respond.

Where the throttle cable connects, there is also a "black plunger" that attaches to the throttle as well similar to the throttle cable, this plunger has a black "nipple?" that is coming out of the back of it. It is not connected to anything.

Is this for the cruise control?

I assume there is supposed to be a vaccuum line connected to this? If so, i have found a hose dangling near here that could possible connect to it.

The hose goes to a T junction, one end of which goes through the firewall near the brake master cylinder area, the other end runs along the drivers side fender area somewhere to the front of the truck/engine area.

Is this the vaccuum line for the "black plunger"? If so can I hook it up? Its a really tight fit.

Thanks

Yes !

Hook it up ! Check the end to make sure there are no cracks. Mine had cracks and allowed enough air to escape the the cruise control did not work. Once I cut it back to a clean edge and re-connected it, cruise feature was restored.

This is so common it isn't even funny. Hopefully you can get your CC to work by just hooking up the hose. I have tried everything (except for replacing the ECU) to get mine to work. Seems like the 96 have the worst luck with the CC. If you have any other questions about the CC, just ask. I now consider myself a "self-certified Land Rover cruise control technician" after approx. 300 hours of labor on the damn thing to no avail... :)

OK. Another 96 disco Cruise UnControl problem. . . Once in an occasional abberrent moment, it will work, usually no more than for a few miles. I have re-hosed my cc system. I have replaced my brake switch. I haven't been able to yet check the vacuum unit under the front left jack compartment, although the connections (eletrical and Vacuum) seem tight and touching. What would you suggest as my next move? It seems to work consistantly while I am coasting downhill :)

sounds like a leak. sure you got all of the vaccum lines? if so it is probably the pump. There is a method to testing the pump to see if the valve opens and closes completely by "jumping" it with a wire touching the positive and negative posts. But coming from someone who STILL hasn't gotten it to work... LOL

Cruise "Control"

 My cruise control on my '96 Disco quit working too - what a coincidence ! I haven't dug into it yet, but it seems to me that when I pushed the button on the dash down below the clock with the funny looking railroad track symbol on it, a light would come on in one of the instruments (speedo) that looked like that symbol. Well, it doesn't do that anymore. Do you guys get an indicator light saying the cruise is on ? If you do, and I don't, could it be a fuse somewhere ? everything else works.
Thanks,
Jim Legge

Not really a coincidence. The CC fails in 90% of all 96 Discos... Most likely the vacuum lines. have you checked those? There are half a dozen or so different things that can go wrong with the CC. I just gave up...

That funny little symbol...

is the Euro symbol for autoroute, autobahn, etc ie interstate highway where you are most likely to want to use the thing... if it actually worked. My certainly does not ;)

CC on 96.
On the 97, there is a little black box hidden under the driver side headlamp, Btwn the two sandwiched metal, You can feel the box, there is a vacuun line that attaches to it as well as a elec line, Just follow the vacuum line, that lil bugger is some kind of switching solinoid, allowing vacuum to reach the CC plunger, Mine is bad from stream crossings!
Mabey this is your prob?
