Cruise Control, Rear Wiper

My truck to do list this Saturday was: mount new spare tire carrier, fix rear wiper, fix cruise control, fix the horn, see if the ABS self healed.

I spent a half day Saturday jerking off with my truck. I really thought I would get SOMETHING accomplished, but I only managed to get my new spare tire carrier mounted (old one rusted through the studs).

My cruise control doesn't work. I had checked the lines and they were OK, my vacuum pump, though, was full of pine barrens silt, and the inside relay was toast. The cylindrical area was also full of rusty silty crud. So I ordered one from Will and installed it this Saturday after cleaning it and sealing the covers with Hylomar. I also put a 6 foot hose on the breather nipple so that it would not get clogged with crap when submerged. However, when I hooked it up the damn cruise control still doesn't work!!!

OK, on to the rear wiper. After removing the motor/gearbox assembly, I noted that there are 3 wires going to the gearbox, and one of those 3 wires along with another black wire goes to the motor. I put a meter on the wires when I turned on the wiper switch with the front door closed, and got 12 volts when I measured 2 of the 3 wires that go to the gearbox, but nothing on the other wires. When I took 2 jumpers from the wires that had juice to the motor, the motor turned. When I later connected the motor back up and re-started the truck, the motor went to the parking position. However, the sucker still doesn't work.

I dropped my truck into a water hole early this summer, and flooded up to the glove box, and all the electronics under there sat in muddy water for about a half hour. I've had the wiper and cruise problem for a while, but since I seldom use both, I never connected it to that incident, but now I'm beginning to think they're related.

There's gotta be some computer that controls both the rear wiper and the cruise control. Do you guys know if its the same one?...and what is the damn thing called? I have a 97 D1.

I never got to the horn once I realized the switch is probably under the airbag...I gotta research how that thing comes apart. And as far as the ABS, I put the fuse in, the light went out, I hit the brakes in dry pavement, ABS engaged, ABS llight came on again, I pulled the fuse again....fuck ABS!!

I would have to check in the Elec. Troubleshooting Manual when I get home, but I think all those items (except spare tire holder of course) go back to the MFU (multi function unit). However, if I remember correctly there are a lot of other items that are driven from the MFU so if it was that unit then you might have a whole lot of other issues as well.

If it was sitting in water, you may want to start pulling up carpet and checking all the connectors for corrosion. (I had a fuel pump problem that was intermittent and it ended up the connector in the rear wheel well had a pin that was corroded and causing problems.) Also check the relays and their connectors too.

It's also possible they are not related problems at all. My cruise control still doesn't work (I'm still digging deeper) but this past weekend I repaired the rear wiper motor by taking it apart to find the magnets that surround the coil had worn so much that they just dropped to the bottom of the casing and weren't making contact. I put the magnets back and secured them again. Rear wiper has been working great.

If it were me, I would check all the connections closely first before running out to get a new MFU. Mind you I'm still trying to deal with the Disco Death Shake and low idle issues. Gotta love the Land Rover. ;)

Thanks for the reply Thomas. Others I've talked to are also thinking its the MFU.

Will Tillery is sending me up an MFU and letting me try it to see if it works before being charged for it.

Will is my go to guy when I need any used Rover parts!

Good Luck. Let us know how it turns out.

I've never dealt with Will myself but it seems from other people on this and other sites that he's a good guy to deal with.

rear wiper

Just a FYI, as pointed out to me reguarding the rear wiper... It will only work if the driver door is closed. (I couldnt get mine to work while I was trouble shooting with the drivers door open). Might not help but sometimes the obvious is easily overlooked.

Cruise Control

It sounds like you have checked the obvious with the cruise control: vacuum hoses okay, hoses tight on pump, diaphragm not leaking, switch okay, etc. The cruise control is controlled by an ECU which is behind the glove box on a NAS D1. The ECU is a metal box about 1" x 3" x 6". You should be able to hear the relay click on and off (have your passenger stick his head down there while you toggle the CC). It is pretty common to have the circuit board inside the ECU vibrate itself apart. My local Land Rover guru will pull the unit and resolder the board and fix it that way. I bought a used unit cheap on ebay (yikes?! a used electronic part for a British car? I know, I know...) and got lucky and it worked and fixed my problem. :p
