Curious about why people choose OME vs. Bilstein w/RTE 2"

Hey everyone,

I was browsing through the RTE website and realized that they offer both OME & Bilstein Shocks w/their 2" Lift kit, but it seems that just about everyone on this board uses OME vs. Bilsteins with thier 2" RTEs. I find this surprising because Bilstein gets a lot of praise around here and I've read quite a few complaints about the OME shocks topping out due to being too short.

Can anyone explain this? I tried searching but I couldn't come up with very many results of people using the Bilstein option.

Best regards,
Dave

I don't remember Bilstein getting too much praise around Dweb. I think they are even SHORTER than OME. OME will be good enough with a general 2" lift and moderate wheeling, anything more and you better start looking for longer shocks. And springs. And bumpstops...etc.

the bilsteins you here so much praise on are the 7100 series. do a google image search of bilstein 7100's and OME. they're two completely different beasts.

X2! With a 2" lift there are other limiting factors. 3"? well that's another story...

Thanks guys. I've pretty much decided though previous threads that I will be going with a 3" lift, but I was just trying to learn something new.
You're better off going 3", otherwise you'd be selling your 2" setup in 6 months. :applause:

Primary reason is price..... I just dropped 1100.00 w/ shipping for bilstiens....Assuming most guys on here just have there disco as a secondary / wheeling vehicle there going to get something thats time proven and also comes with a not so horrible price......

Thats my opinion...but... Opinions are like asshole's... Everyone has one and they all stink

OME appeal to me as they are readily available, durable, and I got them at a very good price (450$ for all 9 items) back in the day...

I like Bilsteins as well and used to run them before going truggy, and am currently running them (next week) on the daily driver...

With 4 Rovers in the family, I'm working on having a "street suspension set" (OEM HD springs, Bilstein shocks), a "mild offroad 2" suspension set" (OME) and coming in 2009-2010 a 18" air shock setup for the truggy...they all have their place...

Its not like you are running Ranchos :D

But with Rancho's you can put a cool ass sticker across the windscreen proclaiming to the world that you're a poser. :ack:

I see a lot of that here in the parking lots.... pick-em-up trucks with huge mud tires, multiple shocks, long overhangs, low slung trailer hitches and dual exhaust straight out the back that would hang up on anything beyond a fire access road.

The sticker lists are always "impressive" and include a lot of Jegs/Summit/Calvin pissing on himself etc etc...... nice, real nice.

Rant over.

Blingstein and Fox both run about $250/ corner for the trik shit

The reason to run the OMEs generally is that they have models that bolt up to the stock positioning while all the higher end stuff is eye to eye and requires new mounts and towers etc which will run up your tab higher than you might want to go if you are not a really serious offroader

For me it was a simple choice...I found the OME set up on sale and couldn't pass up a good deal! I don't offroad enough to justify the kind of dough for the higher end stuff and in flatland Florida it was more than sufficient.

Those are actually nosivad_bor's, I've only broken one and it was internal... Although I think those pics show the weak design/weld of the OME.

OME has such a great warranty it's hard to justify, for me anyway, going with a whole new system... I also only have a two inch lift and drive like a girl.

Sure, for stock length. The 7100's are 130-180. The heims on Bilstein VS the heims on Fox are total shit.

I talked to Steve @ RTE and he said that OME is better for off-road. The Bilsteins are stiffer and provide less body roll, but not as good for a lot of off-roading. He pretty much confirmed everything you guys just said.
