custom 4 link front suspension Idea

I have seen quite a few radius arm set ups very similar to the one pictured above and they work very well. I even ran that set up on my Cherokee and it rode very nice. I have seen a few guys remove one of the upper links. This prevents the arms from binding to allow for more articulation. This can be done because these links are only there to prevent axle roll and only having one off road would work fine. If it were me I would make it easy to re-install the arm for on road use as Yousef mentioned.

I dont plan on making it a removable arm setup, I just really Am looking for the flex with the stability, The nice thing about the frakenrover is that the bars are in a x configuration so you dont need a panhard rod to locate the axle, But the panhard really doesnt bind during flex so Im leaving it, and yes it isnt a true 4 link, just like safarigards isnt a true 3 link, But THose 3 links are really squirrly on the road wiht a load, so I want to find something thats gonna bring the flex and stability..after all im only 3 hours from moab :D SO FAR GREAT INPUTS FROM EVERYONE THANKS>>>>

the 2x2 I have is 1.4 inch, But ill get some 3x3 when I go to start the project, I still have lots of bugs to work on. KEEP THE INPUT COMING!!..

Jason Ill tlak to you about his when you get down here i a week or soo.. COOL!!

3X3 .250 wall isn't strong enough, you'll want at least .3125. I've seen them built with .375 before as they get a huge amount of force. Also very important to gusset the mounts well and spread out the load on the frame, I'm sure you and your friend your friend will figure all that out.

I'm working on a reverse four link for the front of my Rover, but that'll be stage IX of the build-up, when I get the airshocks...

I have something like that in the works for my rig too...Hmmm

depending on the pressures on your bushings, heim or otherwise, four links can be very squeaky.

just something to think about.

Don't worry, the squealing from the brakes will cover that up.

I don't know Lane,

I just spent an entire weekend offroading full loaded. I had all our camping gear, plus 25 gal of fuel on top (5 Spector fuel cells). 2 adults and 2 teenagers with recovery gear and other stuff inside. Drove 500 miles roundtrip on highway doing 65-70 and then hundreds of miles offroad doing anywhere from 5-55 mph. From rockcrawling to washboard roads. 3Link was very stable and never once felt uncomfortable. The wife even drives it and enjoys it. I have thought about strengthen the arms, especially the lower one and even consulted Greg about it. I have about 10,000 miles on the 3link. My idea would be a U or V going from the ends on the axle and then bolt up to the original center link. That one lower bar keeping the whole axle from twisting under is a little crazy to me.

So how do you remove a link in the suspension for greater flex and still maintain control?

.

Think of it as a 3-link, an offset 3-link. We have a D90 here is CO that has an offset 3-link and it works great and as far as I know he's been running this setup for more than 5 years now. There is a guy in NM that did a study about this and found out that an offset 3-link (Pass. side over the third member) achieve more flex than a standard SG unit. I just don't who did it, but I know that he is a physics professor

Lane, most people just install the 3-link w/o trying to dial it in and that's why they have a funky ride. You need to have 2 degrees angle between the 3rd link and driveshaft

One Question

Whats wrong with the stock setup modified? I am planning on building the front lower arms, using heavy wall chromoly and heim joints at the chassis end. The upper will be chomoly tubing with heims front and rear. Same with the track bar. With this setup and modified shock and spring placement, it should flex very well. I will be starting those front arms soon and will post pics. The upper arm is simple.

Lane's nuts. no matter what you do to it, it's going to be a heavy Land Rover with a big ass and limited potential. I wouldn't mess with the LR suspension too much. Keep it what it was meant to be which is a good on and offroad vehicle.
