Did you have a code? A lot of times when the sensor gets backed out there is no code. The car thinks the wheel is locked

This was long enough ago that I don't remember clearly. I want to say that the ABS activated and the dash stayed dark. I think if there is an ABS fault the amber dash light illuminates and stays on, right? Then you have to do the test with the paperclip and count the blinking light sequence? It's possible I went through that. But maybe I didn't. Not helpful, I know, but my brain feels pretty crowded these days.

I get it. Those old systems did strange shit. If you pay attention to the light when it's on and waiting for 8 mph or whatever, it acts different if there are codes stored. If I remember correctly it will go out and then come back on untill speed is seen. If it has a code in it it will be on steady and never have that short time with the light off. They said it was to let a Technician know if there was a problem even before he rolled up to 8 mph.

So my scanner (cheap obd2 connected to Torque Pro) does not throw any codes. Would investing in a Hawkeye or Nanocom give me better results? Im ok with the investment but need to know which one to get. I cant decipher which Nanocom since there isnt a Discovery 1 specific one but there is P38 GEMS one.

No I don't think so. I bet there is no fault in the system. The system has checked your sensors electrical circuits when you started it, every time you started it. I believe it, the sensors are probably fine.
People not familier with this system will not get the sensor up against the reluctor wheel like it's supposed to be. When I install the front ones I put the sealant crap they recommend in the hole, smear it around. Then I sink that sensor into the hole hard enough that I feel it bottom out in the hole. I push it with a big flat blade screw driver. But if the wheel bearings or the swivel housing is loose, the axle will push the sensor away when it wobbles. You hit the brakes and everything comes closer into center. And away from the sensor. So then the signal falls out and the computer figures the wheel has stopped spinning and does an antilock stop when it's not needed.

Thank you, this is good to know. I have an appointment with Lamorna on the 24th so hopefully they can clear it or tell me whats up. Thank you for the insight and help!

Not sure what Lamont's is, but if it's a dealership your probably waiting your time and money. If it's an indépendant shop with some older rover experience your probably going to be ok.
I would shake down some of those bearings first. Get a jack under the axle and pick up one corner at a time. With the wheel off the ground check it for looseness by trying wobble it. This repair will be shit simple if it's just a loose wheel bearing.

And if you do take it to a dealer or any shop for that matter, don't be the guy who says you read on the internet that.....

Thats fair, another person mention Lamorna in another post on this site so i figured it might be more well known. Its an independent rover mechanic in the Seattle area that does some pretty good work. Ha! I do appreciate the follow about being the "read it on the internet" guy. Classic and useful advice!

Ill try and get it up this weekend and see what i can see.

FYI - It was a combination of an open circuit on the front left wheel speed sensor AND loose wheel bearings that need to be fixed.
Thanks for following up. I had been watching this thread as the ABS is on my to do list. I pulled the fuse after replacing my front sensors and rolled down the driveway out into the street.
