Looking for a bunch of D1 axle shims so I can set the end float on my front shafts. I guess the clown who owned my truck before me felt like they weren't necessary.
I was wondering the same thing. But after reading his post 4-5x I think I realized he might be talking about those small spacers that go under the circlip on the front CV's.
There's more play in the CV joint itself than the total thickness of these shims. I've come across that endfloat set up bitchin' tight (so one could hardly jam the C-clip in the groove) to no shims at all, and about 0.05" of play. It never affected anything, as far as I could tell.
Are you guys saying they aren't needed, and I shouldn't worry about them? Seems unlikely, since the manual dedicates space and gives a specific tolerance for setting up the end float... Anyway I was hoping for a handful of them off of some disco being parted out. I have no idea how many I need, and I'm sure as shit not going to spend a bunch of money on these things.
I can't say that - just that on some of my trucks all of these shims are missing and there's about a millimeter of play - doesn't seem to affect anything. But - I may be delusional, too.
I discovered that the shims were missing when I replaced my wheel bearings. It seemed like there was a ton of play but I also could be delusional. I think I'll brave the pick and pull tomorrow and see what I can find.
