I no longer need the terrafirma kit. After reviewing the how to document shared above and realizing my new D1 steering damper wouldn’t work with the the terrafirma relocation kit, I decided to look through my scrap metal pile and come up with a home made solution. (You need the Defender damper to use the relocation kit.)
Looking through my scrap metal pile I found that round heavy weight ( having a brain fart on what it is actually called) that sits behind the right side of the front axle. The mounting bracket was stil attached to it and I decided to have a hard look at the bracket to see if it could be part of the solution. I was pleasantly surprised the holes in it lined up with existing holes in the frame landing it exactly where the right side of the damper needs to mount. I trimmed it a bit and used a piece of angle iron (also in the scrap pile), drilled some holes, and bolted it to the bracket.
Next was mounting it to the steering rod on the left side. I had already prepared a bracket yesterday for this purpose when I was going to mount it in the stock location. I was able to attach it to the steering rod with $9 worth of u-bolts along with some other nuts and bolts I had already picked up at the local hardware store.
I did have to make a couple attempts with the angle iron as the first attempt put the steering dampener too close to the bottom of the angle iron brackets.
The whole assembly sits nicely behind the Safari Gard skid plate.
*I didn’t have time today to check but I may have to move the right side mount up a little and rotate the left side bracket back to assure there is clearance between the steering rod and damper. I will put a jack under the left rear corner to compress the right front spring to see if it is necessary.
