I'm presently chasing several oil leaks on my 96 d1, most seem to come rom the front area. I found and fixed the cam pos sensor leak but I'm still seeing oil from what looks like where the drivers side head meets the block. Do any of you have experience with leaks on the front of the engine ? Any suggestions of what and where to look? Any corrective actions? Etc.
Thanks,s Gordon

I have a leak that is making its way to the catalytic converter. I am afraid to say it but I think I have narrowed it down to the rear main seal. Anyone had this same leak spot and found it isn't the RMS? I really don't want to replace that friggin' seal, but damn am I tired of smelling burnt oil!

sure,
how about the rear corner of the intake gasket/valley pan. pick a corner, any four can leak like, well ....like a Rover. :D

Thanks for the replys, Andrew, is the front cover hard to do , how long did it take you?, did you replace the timing chain and front seal??

I just replaced the Oil Pressure Switch on my 97. It was squirting oil. It's difficult to reach if you have front skid plates, but it is located, on my 97 anyways, on passenger side, mid to front-block, by oil cooler.
It fooled me into thinking oil-cooler lines were leaking since it was squirting oil all over the lines.
Cheap-part from dealer...$10.
Take some Simple Green, spray up in there, get your hose and rinse, dry it off, turn on engine and watch.
Good luck.

Not bad to replace the frt cover seal. Take out radiator and fan clutch pretty straight forward. 24 mm socket for frt pulley bolt. Use air gun for that. Timing chain was fine. left it in. Might have been done before I got the rover as it looked really good and the gaskets looked like they had been replaced before just not very well. get the little o-rings for the cooler lines before you start (2bucks each) I had one the was buggered up and leaked when going back together so gets 4 of those. Took a day to do by myself

best of luck :)

Another place to check is were the base of dipstick tube goes into the engine block. My D1 lost a quirt of oil in 240 miles. I thought the rear main was gone but after power washing it on a hoist I could see oil running done the driver side of the engine with the truck running. To fix it I pulled the tube out put some silicone aropund the base and pushed it back in all the way. I also fixed the clamp at the top of it so it held the tube tight.

Bruce,

Did your lines look like this?

This leak is driving me crazy. From what Bruce has described, i'm hoping my leak will be as simple as his.

thanks

Originally they were wet but after I repaired the cam pos sensor leak the lower front dried out pretty well, I am now looking at a pool of oil collecting on top of the timing cover and running down mostly on the drivers side. I will have to fix it next so even see anything else.
