Hi, this is my first post so I’m not that familiar with how it works but here goes. I have a 1995 Discovery 1, V8 (Jap import) that has developed some fuelling issues. The engine will start and idle, however, when any load goes on i.e. I put it in drive (its automatic) it stops and wont restart.

When the problem started it only happened uphill. I unscrewed the fuel cap a couple of times and there seemed to be a significant pressure differential between the tank and the outside air (more than the usual hissing when you fill up). I wondered about vapour lock, however, then the problem got worse and now also happens on level ground and at start up.
<O:p</O:p
At this stage I have assumed the pressure differential is not significant because the fuel tank cap is designed to vent so I presume it is a pressurised system on the EFI model (although there is a breather for filling the tank).

I think the problem is the fuel pump because when I hit the top of the tank a few times the engine starts. I have also already replaced the fuel filter because I figured it was a good place to start and it is too easy not too.

My main problem is this will be the third fuel pump (from separate suppliers) I have replaced in 40,000km, so clearly there is something else going on. Has anyone else has similar issues or recommendations of what to look for?

I was planning to check the following:

· Fuel pump wiring connection (although I soldered a replacement connection on when I replaced the last pump because it was a bit burnt)
· Visual inspection of fuel lines to make sure they are not somehow crimped form off-road adventures
· Fuel line pressure
· Fuel relays - based on previous posts I have just looked through these can play up and I haven’t looked at these.
Having a look through previous posts I understand similar fuelling issues could also be caused by the sprier box / alarm system. I presume the spider box is not an issue because the vehicle does not have an alarm and I understand the spider boxes where only fitted from 1996 onward and then only for some countries.
Any further thoughts would be great as I need to find what is actually causing this problem in the next few weeks before I head away again.

Fixed it for you so we can read it.

I would check the fuel tank vent tube and see if it is blocked...replace if necessary.

The North American trucks eat fuel pumps; I have no idea if that is a problem in the rest of the world. At the risk of just throwing parts at the truck, I would replace the fuel pump and the fuel filter.
