All:

What is the name and/or part number for the piece of the ignition that senses if the key is in or not? The '95 that I'm restoring for my nephew has a parasitic battery drain. The shop (non LR but there isn't one within hundreds of miles of here) just called & said the problem is that it thinks the key in in all the time. They called the stealership in Portland, who in turn have no clue. Is it just the ignition, or is it something within/attached to the ignition? Common failure?

Thanks in advance.

Paul.

So the Stealership had no clue? You mean your brain surgeon guy called them and they have no clue. I know the top five reasons a 95 Disco would have a parasitic drain. I bet 100 bucks your problem is one of those 5. But you said stealership 1 to many times, and for that Fuck you.

They are a stealership. I tried to give them my business on several occasions- buying vehicles and service- each time I got screwed over. So I went to the other nearest, and have had MUCH better service. It's not my fault that the local mechanic called the LR outfit in this state instead of a nearer one in the next state.

I don't want any of your top five reasons, thankyou.

So your battery is going dead cause it thinks the key is in it? That's strange. My truck thinks the key is in it and it's right. But my battery doesn't go dead.

I had/have a parasitic drain on my 95 like what you're talking about. What I found is when I turn off the engine, I need to push the key in and turn it one more click towards me and then it's really off. There's noticeable movement in, so it seems like it's supposed to work that way. You'll know you're totally off if the radio doesn't come on.

I'm not sure if it's because the entire mechanism is broken or that's how Land Rover made it. If you ever had an older GM, you could turn the key "backwards" and it would turn on the battery sufficient for the radio but didn't turn everything else. Basically, my 95 works exactly opposite of that.

So the bottom line, when you turn off your truck, try pushing the key in towards the steering column, then rotate it back towards you. It's a cheap fix if it works.

Have you by chance noticed if you have a continuous glow around your ignition entrance?

Take the ignitian switch out and look behind it. There is a micro switch toward the column that turns on the light for the switch bezel. I clipped this at the conector, worked for me. Mine is an early '95, dont know if this is true of all models of D1.

On my 95, I tried to re-wire that ignition glow trim, but I couldn't get a good ground so I just left it off. No light and no trim. The PO may have tried to do something, but it's hard to say. At this point, I can turn mine on and off with just about any key or flat screwdriver.

I've heard that's more common than you'd think.
