hi all,

ive been researching on how to replace a missing keyless entry fob. ive read a lot of threads but i havent found any thread with definite answers from people who have actually done it...i even stopped by the stealership, but talked to a service manager that had to ask someone else about my inquiry so i was already wary of what he told me (he said buy a new one of course).

im hoping you guys can help :)

So,

I bought a 1998 D1 a few weeks back that did not come with a keyless entry keyfob. i want to obtain a keyfob (from ebay, other keyfob vendors online) and then have it programmed to work on my car...

1. is there certain keyfob models that will work only on 1998 D1's? does model "KHH 3TXB" sound like the one i should be getting? is there a relationship between the VIN number and the keyfob model?

2. what do i look for when buying a keyfob? ive seen the words "make sure it comes with a barcode/access card/etc" but i dont know if that applies to D1 or D2 or both, or if any of that is true...

3. who can program it to work on my car? is there a device that the dealership uses to program it? i just want to know what it is called so i know what to say when im getting it priced out at different servicers.

many thanks in advance...

You need to buy a two button key fob (Lucas 3TXB) and take the vehicle and the key fob to the stealership so they can sync the two together with test book. There is no shortcut to skip the stealership for a 98 D1. I had this done a few years ago and it worked great...until I lost that fob!

thanks for your insight, finally someone who actually has done it...

where did you buy the fob from? do you remember if it came with a barcode?

hi all,

i just got my keyfob done at the stealership and it works like a charm...

I got a KHH 3TXB keyfob from ebay for 35$. it is correct that you do NOT need the barcode to get it programmed, as long as its the right model fob.

initally i went to fremont land rover (bay area, ca). they took a look at the used keyfob and said nope cant do it. it needs a barcode, and basically were trying to get me to buy a brand new remote. i even mentioned that i think that only applies to D2's but of course they werent trying to hear it.

so i went to land rover san jose, which i figured has been around longer and probably serviced more D1's. took my car in and about 40mins later, i was on my way. remote works, and im smiling...

another option was goign to an independent land rover service shop, and they actually quoted me 50$ more, which was kind of surprising.

thanks to everyone who responsed to the thread, without your insight i probably would have got suckered into a new remote/programming for $250+!

I'll chime in on the love fest. Dean from NC sold me his D1 key fob for $5, I plugged in a new battery, and scheduled an appointment at the dealership.

While waiting I got to check out the Lamborghinis, Bentleys, and a couple Rolls, watch a little bit of the Masters, and flip through the catalogs. The final bill was about $80, which seemed silly, but as a bonus my Disco was returned to me in gleaming showroom condition (they vacuumed and washed it) and during the standard inspection they found a coolant leak and offered to replace my head gasket for $1,800.

Thanks, dealership, but I'll do that myself. Drove away happy in my clean Disco and now that I have replaced the little spring in the tailgate locking mechanism the whole family is pleased with the improved usability.

So thanks everyone. Thanks for the info, the cheap remote, thanks even to the dealership. I love you guys! Sob!
