Hey folks,
I was wondering if it's at all possible to remove a D1 motor and trans at the same time with just a normal engine hoist?
I've pulled motors w/ the trans still attached on IH Scouts and it saves a lot of work when working alone.
I'm fairly new to Rovers, but not to wrenching on old trucks.
thanks,
Ian

What are you trying to accomplish? Are you removing the LT230 separately? As one lump, it is a PITA but can be done. If you drop the LT230 beforehand it is much easier to pull the engine/transmission as a unit.

I'm pulling the whole drivetrain. So, dropping the LT230 will make it possible with just a normal engine hoist?
Just hoping I'm not gonna need more headroom than what the hoist will give me.
Thanks for the tip.

I've done it together. As it was said you need to drop the transfer case though. I have one if the tilting level adjusters on the hoist. I don't see how you'd do it with out it. Makes re installing much easier too.

One more thing, when we do this on a Scout, we have to pull the grill and radiator support off. Once the radiator is out, I should have enough room to clear just the motor and trans?

I think that's possible. Why do you need to pull them both? If it's just about saving time and nothings wrong with the trans I would rethink it.

^ I've always pull the upper plenum and coil pack to access the upper bellhousing bolts. The coil pack needs to come out anyhow to disconnect the O2 sensors and could be subject to crushed against the firewall. Pulling the lower intake manifold makes thing that much better. That extra step is a lot easier than trying to work them from underneath.

If you hook up the hoist, pick up the motor enough to remove the motor mounts then drop the motor down the upper bell housing bolts are much easier. I've done it both ways and I will never do it the old way again. Don't forget to loosen the tranny mounts. Good luck.

Mine was on 95, so no coil packs, but still tight

I'm pulling the motor to swap it for one in better condition. I want the trans out of the way for cleaning and to repair a spot on the trans hump. Looks like either the front driveshaft let go at some point or someone decided to bust a hole in the trans hump.
The under side of my truck is in far shape aside from the hole there. It's covered in oil/road grime.
There's a reason why it only cost me $375;)
