D1 no start when hot

I drove my D1 to work today and home with no issues.
About 15 minutes after getting home I try to take the dogs out for a run and swim., Disco wont start.
Just relays clicking under the dash, I don't hear the starter solenoid making any noise.
I transfer dogs to my truck and go on about my business.
An hour later i get home and the Disco starts right up.

This is not the first time it has happened, let it cool off and it will restart.

Any suggestions?

Try banging on the solenoid next time it does it. Sometimes when they get old and hot they freeze up. Probably time for a new starter.

I just had the same problem addressed at my local indie Rover shop. They said the stepper motor needed to be reset, which they did. I only picked it up today so too soon to know if it worked, but might be worth looking into.

When it happens again try holding the key in the crank position for a long time and see if it starts to crank. Sometimes the security system doesn't like the sequence of your opening the truck and long delays till you try to start it. It was a common thing and a software download was the fix. But not sure how you would get that done now. Search for f-out procedure. I posted the TSB on here before.

The engine wasn't cranking if I read his post correctly. The stepper motor wouldn't be stepping. This problem, if it is what I think, is so intermittent that it might not happen again for months. Disco 2 had a similar issue and they did better describing the cause when it hit a TSB. So if he was busy loading dogs thru a different door, then finally getting in to start the truck. The system thinks somethings up. Kind of like a thief came in the wrong door and took a long time before he got it cranking. These trucks are so easy to steal once your inside the truck. I broke my key off inside the ign lock cylinder after loading all my groceries one time. I just went in and bought a cheap interchangeable screw driver. I had the ign switch off and apart from the ign lock in no time. Then just started it with the flat blade in the electrical part of the switch. So I think that's what the system thinks your doing when it imobilized the truck.

I have no crank when it happens, just clicking under the dash. I will try it hot tomorrow without leaving the doors open for any length of time. I need to finish changing the power steering pump first.
Thanks for the suggestions, I think it is probably the starter solenoid. It has never been replaced, 140k miles on it now.

it could well be the starter solinoid. But to test what I think it could be you need to do nothing but hold the key in the crank position for like 20 seconds. Usually if it's a starter solinoid you will hear a click at the starter when you try to crank it. If it happens again just hold the key in the crank position. Google f out sometimes just called fout.

I hear the relay clicking under the dash when i turn the key.
Nothing happens if i hold the key in the start position for any length of time.
I will google f out to see what it says, and report back.

I think you just eliminated the f out thing. Now I would check all your battery connections and see if when the key is held in the crank position you have battery voltage at the small wire on your starter solenoid. Its not easy to get to but you can do it. If you have battery voltage at the small wire when someone else holds the key in crank position then you need a starter. But first make sure all your battery cables and ground cable are clean and tight.
