D1 - Odomemter running fast?

Last night I was driving home on the highway. I noticed the odometer in my '97 D1 was moving at good clip. Checked the speedo via GPS and it was within 2 mph. Timed the odo 1/10ths at 4 seconds each. We were driving at 65mph so it is turning very fast.

So this is a '97 D1 USA/NA model. I wondered if it was possible to have a dual mode mechanical instrument since it is driven by electrical pulses. In this case the odometer (total distance recorder in LR parlance) and speedo are running at two different rates.

I have searched and found info on the DII mode change but am wondering if my speedo has just lost its marbles.

Speedo and odo should both be driven by VSS input, if mine was any indication when it died. Doesn't mean one component if reading that input different of course.

I've been looking at the schematic for the circuit your asking about . I mentioned in the past that Rovers schematics leave a little to be desired. I see vehicle speed coming into the instrument cluster at terminal 2 and into the solid state symbol and back out of the cluster on term 4 to give a vss input to the ecm , cruise module and service reminder . The circuit description says that the vss signal is in the form of voltage pulses that switch between battery voltage and 0 volts 6 times per wheel revolution . The speed signal is filtered by a speed signal buffer inside the speedometer . So you know a bit more than me about the buffering and what have you . But my seat of the pants feeling is that your instrument cluster has lost it's marbles. Or you went thru a worm hole .
