Hi All

did some seaching and all the info seems to be quite old ~ looks like I am keeping my 99D1 for a while longer and wanted to upgrade the tunes.

Is there anything new that could be done to intergrate an ipod to play through the stock system? Am using a cassette adapter but they seem to get squeeky after two months.

Or ~

Thought about replacing the head unit with something that has an AUX plug in the front - have always liked the Blaupunkt radios, fwiw - is there one that is a simple replacement using the factory connectors? (Is there a factory radio that would be good for this?)

And lastly - what is the recommneded speaker replacements? 4" correct?

Just want decent sound, does not need to be monster powered or anything ultra trick

Thanks in advance
Steve

Thats a lot of bread to shell out just for an iPod input. Might as well just buy a new aftermarket radio with an aux. input and a CD player.

Also, I REALLY don't like the pigtail off the front of the D1 radio which is what Roverville offers. To me, it totally negates that clean, unaltered factory look that I'm assuming people are looking for when they pay to have that mod made. It would be nice if they offered a female input flush on the face.

I just use one of the FM tranmitters. Works well enough.

FM Transmitters suck.

In the D1 radio, you do not have to use the pig tale. You can solid mount the 1/8" plug anywhere.

I do think the price is high, though. But I think it's a lot better option than going to an aftermarket radio, unless you're looking to gain something more than just iPod hook-ups. Obviously an aftermarket radio is better in most all aspects, but they have not made one yet that looks right in the Discovery dash.

FM transmitters suck elephant balls.
I couldn't get one to work well even in navajo desert.
fishEh - unless you're one hell of an audiophile, stock Rover systems is pretty adequate. And you'll spend more money and a lot more time trying to hack an aftermarket stereo into your truck than have whatever Roverville does.
Lastly, if you're a little bit electrically inclined, it isn't one hell of a job to find where the audio inputs are on the PCB. I wish I had that old BMW unit (same as Rover's) and did it before I tossed it into trash.

They're not the greatest but they work.
I never said the stock rover audio system is inadequate(except those ridiculous tweeters). But the head unit is antiquated. My '98 was outdated when it was new. Tape deck? Give me a break. Reaching under the seat to change CD's? Give me a break.
The only option Roverville lists for a D1 is a female pigtale. I guess I just assumed the pigtale came off the face of the unit since there are no pics on their website. If it comes off the back and can be mounted flush somewhere else then its not so bad.
An aftermarket head unit that has both an aux. input and a CD player built in, yet isn't gaudy as hell would be ideal.

CD is just as antiquated as a cassette tape. DVD is just about to hit the trash can.

Wherever the pigtail comes out of D1 head unit, it's better than a tape adapter wire drooling off the tape opening, and a shit ton better than an FM adapter.

Thanks for the info guys, I think I am going to do the Roverville pigtail and get some new speakers from Crutchfield. The radio needed repair anyway, the LCD illumination was going belly up.

Thx

Scott - the same adapter is installed in my 95 SWB by the PO.

It never worked well, and it finally died, draining the battery when the ignition is off.
Since the truck is away from me most of the time, I can't take a day to rip it all out - wish I did it once I bought it.

Try Gromaudio.com I have one in my D2 and works good. Charges while you use it. Just take a pic of your head unit and email it to them with what your putting it into. I keep my IPOD in the glove box.

Any particular part numbers for these, and recommended source?
What do I do with the tweeters in the A pilars?
Disconnect them or replace?

Source, try amazon.com At least that will give you an opportunity to see the different levels of the speakers as the MBQuarts vary in pricing.

I bought a set of Infinity Kappa (429I 150W) speakers for my Discovery and they sound great. I don't recommend these (for the front doors) as they have an attached crossover which is a pain to mount without hitting the window.

I just ran new wiring and zip tied the existing.

Depends a lot on where you live. I had been using that option for awhile then took the truck down to the FL panhandle. Went up and down the band repeatedly at different times of day and never found a clear freq that would work for more than a few miles of travel. YMMV. (Eventually replaced the head unit)

There are also some JL Audio speakers that fit the front doors well. I don't remember the model number. The grill is nice and low-key unlike many of the aftermarket units.
