I am about to get a DI with 116k miles

It has had a lot of work done to it but no Head cover gasket

The forum seems to be filled with HCG replacement stories, but most of them seem to be for DII

so what is the deal? does the DII have a problem? is the DI more reliable?

I have an Acura MDX with 145K miles. It has had ZERO issues. The rover is going to be a back up/fun truck and not a daily driver, but I just hope it not a nightmare or my wife will make me sell it.

D1s seem to have a little less trouble with head gaskets and slipped liners...that being said. If it has ever over heated in it's life that will for sure increase the chances of future problems. If it hasn't been over heated ever and the coolant has been changed yearly then I don't see why it wouldn't easily last 200K plus.

Just don't be afraid to get your hands dirty. Make sure you do preventative maintenance, keep your eye on everything and you'll be ok. If you have no experience with car maintenance then it could be a handful. Have fun with it and welcome to the addiction.

i have changed CV axles, brakes, oil, alternator ect on my previous car (mostly Honda)

my father in law is a mechanic so it should not be to bad.

I only plan on driving it once a week and then for fun wheeling trips.

the head cover gaskit thing just freaked me out

There is a reason JD Power and Consumer Reports always rank the rovers at the bottom of the list in terms of reliability. If you purchase a rover you have to love it with it's quirks and all. I'm constantly working on my D1.

Actually it works better if you use it as a daily driver, and have something like a honda or toyota as a backup / sitter for when the rover breaks. That way you can stay on top of all the little things that creep up on you, and it will be ready to go when you want to take one of those fun trips. Otherwise it will sit, get mad at you, and break on the way to your fun destination.

that make not sense.

Why would little things creep up if it is not being drivin?

my wife's daily drive is an MDX and I drive a volvo V70

The rover gods hate volvos. I had an 850 till a freak accident totaled it out and promptly bought a 99 to replace it... But the po of the 99 did not take care of it. You should have seen how bad the oil pan was sludged up.

bah! The disco will get over it.

This forum just freaks me out with all the issues. But they seem to be with D2's. Is that because the D1s are more reliable or because they are all dead.

My hope is to do nothing but oil changes the first year, so that is why I will limit driving the rover

x2 on volvos. My son's 240 died, my daughter's 860 is a POS constantly need something fixed. I just turned 275k on my D1, runs like a champ, I've had very minimal trouble with it. Go figure.

That is what I like to hear. I have only had the v70 since march. The previous owner had dumped a ton of money into it and was fed up. Seemed like a good opertunity to me. I really like the volvo on the highway, it tracks like a bmw

I bought the mdx with 48k miles 2.5 years ago and it now has 145k miles. Not even one single thing has ever gone wrong with the mdx.

Bring it to Ohio, I'll do the head gasket parts and labor for 1500.00
Your hands can stay clean that way.;)
