D2 Door Handle Misfunction (Not Working!)

Last winter, the handle on the front passenger door stopped opening the door after a freezing night following rain.

It remained so until the weather warmed up, but then started working again, albeit slightly irregularly.

A quick look at RAVE shows that when you pull the handle to open the door, the control rod pushes down to release the latch. The door lock was fine, all workings normal, just the door handle wouldn't open it.

The door handle control rod passes down to a plastic clip on the latch lever, the clip is about 30mm long, black plastic on early cars and white nylon on later cars.

The clip relies on its squeezing of the control rod to grip it, the rod is threaded, but with smooth sides to the early clip the rod can push through and take the mechanism out of adjustment. The later clip has serrations inside to give a better grip.

Both clips can be released by a simple flap, the rod can be released and repositioned and the clip tightened again.

Job done.

The door card has to come out, but that and peeling of the vapour barrier are the only jobs needs for access.

The early clip has a single clip-over flap, the later clip has a more complex arrangement. Both are just visible through the door panel.
