Engine started to make a ticking sound when warmed up, can not really discern where the sound originates. Checked oil, was down, added more and ticking went away for about a week or so. A friend suggests timing belt, I am hoping not.

Any Ideas and know a decent mechanic in NorCal

Mines been ticking since I bought it at 100k miles. It seems like a common issue that isn't worth ripping a motor apart for. I've just been keeping it well maintained and I'm at 145k now.

Two interior pistons in my 2004 were going up & down like a pair of castanets.

Two interior pistons in my 2004 were going up & down like a pair of castanets.

What was the reason? Was it movement in the wrist pin?

Mine has been making a noise that is not lifter, and not bottom end bearings. I was thinking that it might be a piston moving around in the wrist pin.

Engine overheated at some point in its life, cylinders were out of round. Sounded great on start up, then would tick like hell after about 3 minutes of warming up. Upon removal of the block you could reach in and rattle the pistons back & forth with your fingers. Replaced the engine with an 80,000 mile salvaged unit. The original engine ran fine for about 50,000 miles before the ticking drove me mad and I replaced it.

I just picked up an 03 with 127k that had a tick. I took it apart to find the #3 piston sleeve had slipped (area corresponds with where the ticking was).

I pinned the sleeves and will be reinstalling the motor in the next day or two. We'll see if it stops the tick or grenades the engine haha

How much oil was it burning?
