I looked into this, as well, ended up sticking with my stock setup. If I recall, you swap over the whole D2 shock tower. It's straight R & R (with the caveat that I'm relying on memory, so there could be more to it).
I run the spring insulators like you described Terry. I don’t make any modifications other than sticking it on the spring and shoving it up in the truck.
I had them on some iteration of lift at one point. Don't remember a difference.
Id only use them again if I needed 1/4 to 3/8" of lift to level something. I think the main purpose wasn't NVH, but to use springs with 1 side unground and save some money.
I also do. I flex enough that the front springs droop since they're not retained at the top, so the "cone" portion of the isolator gets the spring back in place. I have drooped the spring enough to get below the "cone" and mangled the rubber. I had to replace that one, but they're affordable.
Just installed D2 front isolators on my D1 with an OME 2". Total front lift came out to 2.5", but I didnt try without the D2 isolators so I can't say if they gave me a true additional 1/2". No modifications needed, but the thread pitch on the studs are different so I just needed new hardware (8 nuts).
