uhhh...duh. I have been using 87 in my D2 since I bought it about 3 weeks ago. this morning i noticed the "premium unleaded" sticker for the first time.

any opions on if its necessary (i havent noticed anything bad, but i also havent run it on 91) and if so, have i done any damage in the 1000 or so miles i have driven with the low grade gas?

needless to say i didnt fill up this morning as planned, but i had already started pumping the 87 so i just put enough to get me to work.

thanks

I believe most people say that you can use 87, correct me if I'm wrong.

I for one used 91 as I could see a difference in my truck. It also had an impact on what gas station I used. That pig was finicky!!

There are countless numbers of posts on this subject... search for octane and you should find info. Bottom line is -- The truck is designed to run on premium gas, it's better for it, and it runs more efficiently (better gas mileage) while on 91/93 octane... It's not worth cheaping out on...

Hi,

I would do a search for "octane" here. It seems to be a religous discussion for some, but I tend to adhere to the pay me now or pay me later school. IOW, the additional, incremental, cost of the premium is easier to take than saving a bit one each tank and then needing a valve job in a few years.

With all that being said........D1's are cool on 87, aren't they?

Please tell me they are ok, because I never paid attention to this issue before (hopefully because there was nothing to pay attention to, right?:banghead: )

I for one cannot afford to fill my '00 D2 with 91 every time I fill up (there's more important things to spend money on...like lift kits, big tires, wheeling expeditions, beer... :) ) so I use regular all the time, and have been using 87 for the past 2 years since I got the disco. It runs fine. I drove from VA to ID back in September with the d2 loaded down with $hit, and ran 87 the whole way except in the mid-west where, for some reason, the mid-grade stuff was cheaper. Didn't notice a difference.

The only thing I do because of that sticker is to run some of that cleaner-outer stuff through every two weeks or so...don't know if it actually does anything, but I do it anyway.

Its probably just luck-of-the-draw whether or not you have problems over this issue...I for one cannot understand why Land Rover engineers would put a v-8 that can only use the high dollar stuff into a vehicle that is made in, indeed hails from, a country whose gas prices make ours look cheap. Unless gas prices are reversed over there...

Just my $0.02...

Your D2 knows its running 87. The knock sensors retard the timing and you get less mileage, Don't you think the people that made the engine had a reason for specifying premium. For cheapskates sake man, we're talking $4 per tank!

This is the bottom line. Every single time this thread comes up, this is what it boils down to.

Yes. The cost is so negligable it is laughable - just forego that extra beer at the bar and fill it with what the manufacturer designed, built and spec'ed for it.

I don't own one car out of 4 that can use anything but 93 - if gas is getting too expensive to fill it with 93 I would sell it.
