I am working on a friend of mine's D2. It has sat for 5 months and we put a new battery in and it will not crank. Turns over just fine...just doesn't start. There is no spark. Here is what I have done already.

1. replaced crankshaft sensor
2. checked fuel pump and its running
3. checked all relays and fuses
4. checked everything I can think of....

The last time the truck was started (before it sat for 5 months) it cranked and ran just fine. I don't think its a security issue because the little red light is flashing and stuff when I lock and unlock it. The only thing left i guess is the camshaft sensor, but I don't really just want to throw parts at it. The only other concerning issue is that the truck will not communicate with my scanner. Seems weird and leads me to think it could be a wiring/computer issue.

Thoughts?

Pack rats ate the wires on the ECM's?? Look under the hood and under the passenger dashboard.
Do you see the check engine light come on with the key cycle?? tell-tell sign the ECM doesn't have power

Please use a Land Rover specific diagnostic tool to retrieve the proper fault codes.
Even though you placed it, it still sounds like a bad crank position sensor which is typical for our Thor V8s to go bad.
Ensure you get a Bosch branded part #ERR-735 crankshaft position sensor.

As stated in my post...The truck is NOT communicating with my scanner. And yes it is a Land Rover specific scanner. Also, the crankshaft sensor I installed is the Bosch sensor. I think rats chewing wires is the most likely culprit here. I'll dig in a bit deeper this weekend.

I can't remember if D2's behave this way or not, but if the crank sensor is functioning properly I'd think you would see the RPM needle move while spinning it over. The fact that it won't communicate through the OBD port has to be the smoking gun here.

As I said before look for the engine light on key cycles. tell tell sign ECM doesn't have power. (but you never know maybe someone pulled the bulb out)

Look for rat nests or mess under the hood on passenger side along with behind the glove box area. It's also possible it has a leaking sunroof and water made its way into the ECM in the glove box, but the Rats are the most likely thing of all.

And if the key fob works one would think the alarm ECM/BCU thing is working.. If on key cycle the fuel pump runs for 15 secs or whatever and then turns off, I would think the ECU is at least halfass working..

The engine light and WHAT the fuel pump does with (key on) would tell us a lot more. There is also two (2) fuse boxes but I'm sure you are aware of that. Also could TRY to unplug the MAF sensor to try to FORCE open loop on her.

OR use a fuel gauge and test for fuel pressure. I've had the feed tube in the pump assy go bad MANY TIMES.. Pump runs, but only 1-2 psi of pressure at the rail.

Just trying to help, hope you get it figured out!
