You know these soft shackles far exceed to rating of your winch and your winchline, right?

I'd have to go look. But I think the soft shackle I have is rated at 18k pounds. Insert one snatch block into the mix and you have now exceeded its capacity.

I've seen one break during recovery, that's why I won't use one.

If you like them. That's cool. I'm just saying I would not use one for any sort of recovery.

What would be a situation where one would use soft shackle over a standard d shackle?

And what exactly do you think you steel winch cable is rated to?? Well in case you're not sure, 3/8" steel cable is 14,400lbs. And your 3/4" 7T steel shackle is 14,000lbs(I'm really good at math).
If you don't like soft shackles and synthetic line that's great. But please stop trying to justify your distaste for them by throwing out numbers that don't support your case. Its just embarrassing.

To answer your question a soft shackle can be used anytime a regular shackle could be used, and even more. I've got tube bumpers and a HD tube rack. I wouldn't hesitate to slap a soft shackle around either if the recovery situation warranted it(and no I wouldn't bend the tube, its DOM).

Just my experience with them I guess. To each his own

Brett, I'm sure you are good at math but you would probably be better of explaining the benefits of a soft shacle to your shoe. Ignorance is truly bliss in this case.

Educate me then.
I'm not opposed. I'm just saying. My experience wasn't good when I actually used one for recovery.

Ive used my soft shackle 3 times.. Once on a D2 with no front recovery points in a double line pull from my winch. Second time was a Jeep with no rear recovery points. We put it around his leaf spring bracket. Third was a newer FJ with no rear recovery points, but he had a tube bumper.
See the common denominator here?
I would rather have a soft shackle break than a steel cable or a D-ring. They dont hold kinetic energy like big heavy metal parts!

I could be wrong. But the claim on the link you provided, 42k Break strength and 10.5k of wll, is the rating for a straight pull of Amsteel. Not in the knot tied config as they show.

Do those numbers still apply when configured in a basket, like it is shown around a tube?

I use one of these when going around a tube like you describe. These are rated for different configurations. Basket, Chocker, Etc.

12k rated capacity (and tested) in a basket config.

Does the TJM synthetic winch line include the TJM winch hook (the winch line can be ordered with or without the hook)?
