D2 Rear Bumper - Why?

I'm not looking for the 'which', I'm looking for the 'why'. I've gotten by for many years with the fat rear end, occasionally skidding off the factory hitch... I've broken parts over the years, but never anything from the rear diff on back.

So, I guess my biggest concern is - do I really need the extra weight of a steel bumper back there to gain some extra rear departure angle (assuming Greg Davis bumper)?

I'm asking because my wife was rear-ended recently, and since I've already got the insurance check, this would be the right time to do it - if I'm going to do it. Thanks for the guidance...

(For some reason I'm expecting at least one answer like 'if you don't know why you need it, you don't need it') - I won't consider that helpful...

John, you did not mention where you drive, that would help. The biggest why's I can think of are to avoid tearing off the endcaps or crumpling the stock bumper and doing body damage. Both of these apply mostly to tight trails with lots of trees or big rocks. If you rarely see either then you may not have a great need for an aftermarket bumper, a used stock one would save you some money. If you do not already have them, I think sliders and stronger axles might be better places to spend the money for now.

I have a DI so it is a little more protected due to less overhang. I have scraped the receiver as you mentioned but have not damaged the stock bumper yet. Making a solid rear bumper is on my list of to-dos but honestly it is near the end of the list as I have not had trouble with the stock bumper yet.

I put a SG on mine. I bought mine used (it just had not been mounted up ever) but if I was going to buy a new bumper I would of bought a Greg Davis bumper.

The main reason why I did it is because now that I'm going to wheel the D2 I don't want to crush my quarter panel. I wheel with a lot of D2's and I frequently see them get quarter panel damage coming off rocks even on mild trails. And I've seen D2's fall into ruts and just completely rip the stock bumper off.

So I just did it to protect the truck. But its nice to have the better departure angle and integrated receiver with the SG, Greg Davis, and RTE bumpers. And with the SG the integrated gas tank skid plate is nice.

As stated earlier, it depends a lot on what type of wheeling you do. Discos have a huge rear overhang and are notorious for handing up at steep approaches/departures. The rear quarters are also easily damaged on the rocks...

X2, I tore mine off too(I still drag the metal one around and it has alot more clearance).
Again, its relative to where you wheel.

Although I could (and have) gotten along without for this long and it wasn't on the radar before being rear-ended, now seems like the right time. Greg Davis, here I come... Oh, and the DAP gas tank protection - anyone seen it?

The DAP guard has shitty brackets that bend up into the tank as soon as you hit it on something. Save your money.

I look foreword to getting rid of the rear bumper, but it is about the very last thing on my list. If I got rear ended though and had some money to put towards it I would move it right up the list quick.

So, then, what will work for tank protection with the Greg Davis bumper?

Mine should also work for the Greg Davis rear bumper. As long as he doesn't touch the factory fuel tank strap bolt locations it will work. However I am about 14 days out for getting some inventory. Pics soon.
