D2 rims/tire options

I recently purchased a nice 2004 D2 HSE which has the 18" rims and what I would consider almost street tires.
I would like to have a set of more aggressive tires for off road and winter weather use.
I already have a set of 16" steel rims from a Discovery 1, would it make sense to get a set of 16" tires to mount on these rims to make swapping more easy? Will this change conflict with the workings of the trucks computers/settings other than throw off the speedometer?
How far can I change the outside diameter from it's current 28.5" (approx)?
Thanks
Pete

different axle, different bolt pattern

overall tire diameter will effect the speedo, not the rim diameter

I've done a ton of research lately into rim options for a d2. Specifically, 16x7 in order to run 235/85R16 -- tall and skinny.

There's basically nothing out there in the aftermarket.

Terrafirma makes a "Dakar wheel" but after digging more, it seems they don't make it anymore.
Tf also makes a beadlock 16x7 wheel, but it's not technically road legal and I don't have a need for a beadlock.
All the steelies only come in 16x8.. too wide for 235/85. And they're definitely not lookers

I also looked into any 16x7 wheels I could find, but frankly they all look weird or tacky. There's also the problem of matching offsets, center hub size, bolt pattern, etc.

Which basically brings me back to stock disco alloy wheels. Brand new, forget it, they're like 350$ a pop.
I did find a few websites that sell refurbished oem wheels. This is currently my plan because I can't find anything else

What's wrong with factory 16" D2 alloys? In my opinion they all look good: the Stratos are fine, the Mirage are better, and the Typhoons are my favorite. You can probably find someone locally who would be willing to sell a set used. There are some P38 Range Rovers on craigslist for <$3,000. You might ask the sellers if they'd consider a wheel trade since for most people an 18" wheel is an upgrade.

Also call Gord'n at Lamorna Garage in Seattle. His inventory of used parts is large and he'd probably sell you a set of 16" D2 alloys for cheap. 206-361-7002.

Those are nice.. and they are rare here because no NAS trucks had them. they were only installed overseas.
All NAS D2's had either 18x8, or 16x8 wheels.

Good find!

I bought an '04 SE7 when it was 2 years old and it came with the 18" Hurricanes and stock sized tires. I priced replacement tires and decided to go with a set of 16" rims from an '03 (like jgdisco2's). They cost me $50 each from a wrecker and with the lower price of 16" tires I ended up spending less than what a set of 18" tires would have cost, although that gap might have narrowed in recent years.
With the 245/75-16's the truck had a far better ride and didn't follow uneven pavement like the 18's did. I recently picked up another '04 that has 18's and driving it home reminded me of how much nicer the truck is to drive with the taller tire.

Those will be worth waiting for. I admired those on the G4 Discos, they would be a classy and functional addition to your truck.

Another nice thing about the stock 16's, is that they're about as close to beadlocks as your going to get in a factory wheel. 255/85/16 for that tall skinny look.
