If I were to do it again, I would buy a truck that already has a lift, bumper, etc... and maybe just needs a little TLC.

I think anybody thinking about buying a disco2 should really learn more about the original discovery. Even just go on some of the parts exploded views of the drivetrain. GEMS is so much less problematic outside of fuel pumps and oil leaks.

The original Disco has the same drivetrain as a Defender. The Defender is the ultimate prize. The LJ Discovery is just more comfortable, holds more gas.

I spent a little more than I wanted on mine, but it had a new suspension lift, 33" tires, roof rack, access ladder, all the lights etc...probably $5k worth of add on's if you installed it all yourself, more if you pay labor rates too. So the value was there for me in that I didn't have to do any of that. Turn key basically. So I say be patient and find one loaded up with stuff.

Although part of the fun is adding all the stuff, especially if you have the cash to be able to do it all at the front end of ownership. So you just have to figure out where you stand on how much stuff you need.

D1's do hold a sweet spot in my heart, but I also like the better road manors, and minor refinements of a D2.

I found plenty of 04 Transfer Cases complete with the linkages for 500.00 shipped.

I also heard that if you didn't want to go thru all the trouble of dropping the entire transfer case you can just swap out the front part of the TC with one equipped with a nipple. I have no idea if that's true or not, but I was gonna check a local junk yard and see if that 00 D2 has the nipple or not.

I love both my D1/D2. Each have their own personalities, but I am extremely grateful my D1 is a 50th Anniversary Edition in Woodcote Green. Besides a few minor dings it's entirely original and in mint condition. My 02 D2 has a few scratches outside from wheeling, but overall it's in great shape for 159K.

Some of the used D2's out there blew my mind on how much they wanted and just how far they'd gone without regular tune up's or oil changes.. D1 was a rare find, from the original owner 120K, and always taken to the LR dealership for everything since it was new. It had all service records, and was bought at the same dealership it was serviced at. The 02 was from a LR Shop in Austin, but it's owner let a dog go to town on a lot of the interior parts which I have been replacing since finding a donor D2 locally.

I'd go for a mechanically good shape Rover vs a cosmetic one anyday. The CDL transfer case is not that big of a deal and can be upgraded so don't let the lack of that stop you from getting a nice D2. Good luck with your hunt!

The disco 1 is the only one that can truly claim a link to the heritage.

The transfer cases are the same inside. So damn stupid. It's just one of those fuck you's BMW left behind. But we cooked the books to sell them a factory that was still camo covered for protection against German bombings

I know, you've just gone completely through that whole truck. However, I think the lack of CDL might be a deal breaker, bc wheeling.

Have chris look under the truck and see if it has a diff lock lever on the t case. I've seen one set up that the guy drilled a hole in the trans tunnel and ran a direct link to it. The hole ends up in the right place and the link sat under the floor mat.

I looked a while back and didn't see anything. I look again tomorrow as I will be doing some maintenance.

I never thought I bled Green until I bought a Jeep lol. Then I was like what an over-rated POS! Give my squeaks n rattles vs this tin metal toy with the weakest/cheapest hardware ever put on a 4x4!!! Sure once you upgrade all the weak crap you have a good 4x4, but at that price just give me a D90 and be done with it.

My 01 was one of them that had the dif lock knob on top. If you have one it takes a 10mm wrench to lock and unlock. I have seen contraptions built to lock and unlock from inside the truck here on Dweb, most used 1/4" drive socket parts. I found a D1 shifter for around $50 and installed it on a lazy winter day; took about 4 hours with all the bullshiting I had to do with my brother and dad.

Knowing the heritage of jeep, low quality shouldn't be a surprise to anyone. The ones made for WW2 where designed to last 90 days.

Meanwhile my 01 didnt have the correct T case. I found one at a junk yard for $200. Payed someone $400 to rebuild it and install it. Then I spend $175 to install the D1 linkage.

The thing that sucks about that is everything will likely be very hot when you go to lock it upon arrival to the trail, and there is a good chance the undercarriage will be muddy when you are ready to unlock it. I've done it before, but only once and it sucked. Also, if you shut the vehicle off with the diff locked, the traction control will be disabled when you restart it unless you have an '04 SLABS ECU.

On the earlier 99-02 D2's you can cut a black/blue wire on the middle the C0506 SLABS connection (pin #9) or install a switch to eliminate the TC being disabled without having to swap the SLAB ECU.

Or you if you don't want to do that and can find an 04 SLABS ECU cheap then go for it.
