D2 temp redlined

01 d2. Temp went up to red/light came on this am. Pulled over, shut car down, turned back to key pos 2 immediately and temp is normal range. Wth? Did not seem to be overheating. At work so can't look into it. Thinking air bubble (I have a leaking throttle body gasket). Just wanted to check here and see if this is a common theme for d2. Just odd that it immediately went back to normal. I had my d1 for 10 yrs and never saw the temp gauge over half.

Buying/borrowing a diagnostic tool like a Scangauge will give you a more precise reading of your coolant temps than your dash gauge will. By the time the dash reads "hot" it's already too late. With the real time data from the diagnostic computer you can see the temp rising and take corrective action before things get crazy.

There is guegling. Have been waiting on gasket to come in. Hopefully all is well. Have been at work all day and unable to look at it.

ok, so first thing i noticed is there is no filler on top of radiator. i took the cap off of the reservoir, started the engine, heater on and added some distilled water as the reservoir was very low when cool. when warmed up there is gurgling and spitting out of reservoir. the top hoses dont seem to be filling up as they are mooshy. sounds like blown hg?

also, noticed that some of the water coming up looks green while the reservoir looks orange. thinking the dealership i got it from added wrong coolant. correct me if i am wrong but dont they crystalize if mixed?

back again, must not have given it enough time for the bubbles to work out of system. coolant was quite low (about a gallon). got the level stabilized and there is no gurgling/burping going on in the reservoir anymore.

also, it has def been changed to green coolant but the reservoir is stained orange/pink from dexcool. not sure how well the block was flushed before changing or if it was at all. all i can do is flush it myself and start fresh.

it really doesnt look like the throttle body gasket is leaking that much but i just got the truck and have no idea how long it has been going on.

i will just have to watch the fluid level to see how quickly it is quickly disappearing.

hopefully no hg failure...

I had the top hose coming out of the thermostat slowly creep up and eventually slip off dumping most of the coolant out. It doesn't fit that well with the other hoses and clamps crowding it.

Then got a small drivers side head gasket leak that was plugged with K-12 - this was about 40K miles ago.

If you have a leak and gurgling from the dash when you drive (accelerate) then you have air in the system. This needs to be bled out - search and find the bleeding procedures (front up a steep hill, reservoir raised, etc) and bleed it out (you'll also note the bleed screw on the top hose above the shroud over the fan - and no, there is no fill at the radiator, it's done via the reservoir).

I've only ran Dex in my D2 and have seen recommendations for only keeping that in there versus the green stuff and/or mixing the two. I'd recommend flushing it and refilling with Dex (orange) to be on the safe side, otherwise get Will's number on speed dial for radiators.
