D2 Transmission Noise.

My 99 D2 seems to drive fine when it is driven in 3rd gear, but when driving in D it seems to clunk when you slow down to between 5 and 10 miles an hour when it downshifts. Is this normal for Disco 2's? Would changing transmission fluid help? Do you think it is the transmission or could it be the diff or a driveshaft? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
J

So how many miles are on your truck and when was the last time you serviced the ******??

I just hit 50,000 miles. I have only had it since april, so I have never never serviced the transmission, or any of the diff fluids. I checked the transmission fluid about 3 weeks ago and it looked clean and it was already full.

There is a fill plug on the front side of the transmission pan. If you loosen the plug and fluid drips out then it is full. At least I would assume it is.

Might be worth your while to do a transmission fluid & filter change.

Not sure if you have the records, but at 60k or 4 years (whichever is first) the "book" says to change the ATF fluid. I will be doing my 60k service in a couple weeks and am going to do the filter too.

It certainly sounds like this is a DIY job and worth your while for the peace of mind.

Dean,
On a 99 you check or fill the ****** only after 1 to 2 minutes of idle time, it can't be checked while running.

If the engine is not on, then fluid will spill out the fill plug. The workbook says to keep the engine on while filling it, so im assuming that it must be on to know if its full...

I guess I will try checking it with the engine running. Maybe even go ahead and change it. From what I understand you can only change half of it at a time since the only fluid that will drain out is the fluid that is left in the pan itself. I also hear that the transmission filter is kinda pricey (for a filter) just like everything else on LR's.

The clunk you hear is normal. From what I understand (and experience on a regular basis) is that it is the torque converter kicking in and out. I have had 2 D2's and they both did it. Still wouldn't hurt to check the fluids though.
