D2: What would be the most ideal custom backspacing?

Hey everyone,

I've been reading though backspacing/offset threads for the last week and still have some questions. I learned a lot from the search engine, but really all I found was what offset/backspacing was available for us to deal with, but nobody seemed completely satisfied. Out of all the wheel threads it seems that the ones using factory alloys were the happiest with thier backspacing. I'm planning to go with a 16x8 on 265/75 leaving the option to go bigger.

I'm trying to take up 4WheelParts on thier buy "3 get one free" deal on ProComp Steels, but I'm not convinced that the 4.25" BS is really the best route (just an easy one). AB seems to be 4.0" BS, I've seen some steels in 4.5" BS, and I believe the factory alloys are 16x8 6.5" BS. I'm going to place a customized order with ProComp and I'm going to see if they'll do a custom backspacing as well as lug pattern. At this point it seems that steels w/a factory backspacing might be the most desirable, or maybe steels w/ 5-5.5" BS for a slightly wider stance.

My question is:

If you were able to personally customize your backspacing for a 16x8J wheel, what would it be?

Best regards,
Dave

iirc mine say 16x8j on them, i ran 265s and am now on 255/85, only rubs radius at full forced lock
I'd think that those factory steels have the same backspacing as the factory alloys. The rubbing on the radius arm can be resolved by extending the steering stops, right? I wonder if 1" less of backspacing would be beneficial... hmm, maybe I'll be a guinea pig. I've been looking through some pictures this evening and it seems like factory backspacing is good, but could afford a slight flushing up.

I'll call up one of the local dealerships tomorrow and see if they can tell me the exact backspacing/offset of the factory alloys. On second thought I think I'll call a few different dealers and compare their unreliable numbers.

Does 16x8J 6.5BS sound accurate to anyone? I hate backspacing in inches, I like milimeters way better. I'm more used to going for the lowest offsets possible (something like gmookher is probably running on the Z; S30?).

I did more searching and found this old thread that "Craig" posted after trying out a RTE 3" w/265/75 and Procomp w/4.5BS. He reported very little rubbing, but noted some triming had occured. Now I'm wondering if a 5" BS would be best. Damn... I better break out the measuring tape.

wider stance and with less BS the more steering room you'll have(same as spacers but mo better).

I disagree Nathan. in this case spacers are better, because you only want to increase the width in the front. The choices are spacers, or two pairs of wheels with different offsets.

Personally I run wheels with more or less stock BS, and 2" spacers in the front. The spacers have made a huge difference in turning circle, stability, and eliminated the rub on the radius arms... and now, if I can cram the front end into a tight space, I can be assured that the rear will fit too :D

I got a set of 2" spacers in preparation for some taller narrower tires... I put them on with my 285's just to check them out, and I'm really impressed with the handling improvements.

It looks a little poser with the 285's sticking out, but the better turning circle and better stability make me want to leave them on, even though I'm not getting the tires for awhile.

So, back on topic, I'd go with approximately a 1-2" wider stance from the stock alloys... whatever backspace that ends up being.

I have these same ones, 16x7 on my D2. These are some strong ass rims! Mine have seen some abuse on rocks and I have run as low as 12psi without losing a bead. Kind of pricey, but worth every penny...
I'll break out the measuring tape on thursday and measure my backspacing.
Post some pics when you get your wheels!

I will for sure. Part of me wants to play it safe, but on the other hand I'd like to be adventurous. It sounds like most have a really crappy time buying through 4WP, so I'm probably just going to go straight through procomp. I'll save the part number when I'm done.

I have the Pro Comps with the 4 or 4.5 BS with 265/75/16 on them and they rub easily on suspension compression. They tear up the weather stripping on the rear doors as well as dig out plastic in the front wheel wells. I would stay away from the standard pro comp wheels and spend your money on factory Disco Alloys or the steel wheels mentioned above. They may not be pretty but they look like they work.

It depends on what size tires you want to run. On my Disco, I run 255/85/16s on 16x7 steelies (from summitracing.com). The wheels have a 4" BS and I have zero radius arm rubbing and a slightly wider stance. The turning radiius has improved over stock even w/o adjusting the steering stops. I rather not adjust them just to protect my cv's a smidgen.

I've talked to some more people off this thread and it sounds like 5.5", maybe just a little bit more like 5.75", backspacing should be the best route to go with 265/75. That should make the wheels stick out about 1" more than stock. I feel comfortable with that number, so I think I'll be placing my order.
