I did a search and found that it could either be the regulator or a plastic wheel. The front of the window wants to roll down and the back seems bound. It is up as far as it will go, but it will move 1/4 inch up and down.

So, regulator or guide?

you can do a search on here and you can find a fix but Will should have the regulator if you just want to replace it instead of fixing it

I recently replaced a regulator on my wife's 2003. The plastic wheel guide had degraded and eventhough there are a lot of fixes out there, I opted to just get the part and replace it, as this provided the least downtime for the vehicle.

There are aftermarket parts that have a square slide instead of a round wheel that really doesn't roll, but I found the OEM part at http://rovahfarm.com for a decent price. The one thing about buying a used part is that it would have already endured wear and I didn't want to spend the time to replace a part that had a short life on it. This is a fairly simple replacement, but it does take a little time.

Check ebay. That is where I found the regulator from Rovah Farm (Trevor is a great guy!), but then check http://www.roverconnection.com/ DII parts.

Let me know if you need guidance, but it is a pretty easy deal.

Thanks. I just bought a regulator from Will Tillery 434-251-9331. Looking at Rave CD it appears that I need a torx socket. By chance, what size torx do I need to get the motor off the regulator?

You will need torx to do other work on your disco in the future. Just go to an autoparts store and buy a small set of torx at least from 15 to 30.

If you don't want to buy another set later, then go ahead and spend a few bucks more and get a "security torx" set. Some torx bolts on your disco are going to be security. NOt the parts you are about to change, but say you wanted to replace a horn button (I have replaced 2), then you will need a security torx set. Basically, the only different is that the tip of the torx will have a small hole drilled in it. They work on non security bolts as well, of course.

I think I paid like $7 for a set of 8 or 10 from Checkers.

in the meantime, i had a problem with my RRC where the window was fine opening, but would only close part way. i found that if i pulled on the top of the glass inward (towards myself in the driver's seat) while pushing the up button, i could get it to roll the rest of the way up. not sure if that will help with your problem, but thought i might suggest it anyway.

Update:

Bought a regulator from Will Tillery

Installed it (finally)

The guide was broken (little plastic wheel) on the old one.

The install was greasy, but not difficult. Thanks all for your help.

I replaced the rollers on my '96 D1 windows (driver's, front pax and rear left) using slightly modified shower door rollers purchaded online, and made up some new pins using standard 5/16" nuts & bolts. Total cost was ~$10 + pain and suffering of about 1 afternoon.
In my opinion, there is no point in buying the whole assembly since the motor, lever arms and track should last pretty much forever, unless you routinely drive with a truckload of bored children who roll the windows up and down every few minutes ;)

true, the fabrication of a plastic part is not difficult, I just knew I had 1 hour to do the job.

I still saved at least 300 bucks going through Will Tillery.

Thanks all. I just wanted to follow through and let people know the end result.
