Looking to upgrade to new tires down the road, got BFG ATs (265/75 on 16 rim) on the truck right now. The question is how much bigger can i go without rubbing, and is it worth switching to a smaller steel rim to get more tire under the truck?
285/75-16 would fit, but you might have to trim a little and gearing could become an issue. If you are just looking for more grip, then go a little wider, but not taller.
I go mountain biking and backpacking in West Virginia several times a year and gearing hasn't been an issue. I may have learned to speed up before big climbs to keep my momentum.
