98' D1 - noticed a horrible rattling while idling from the bottom of the motor. My first thought was oh shit, a rod getting ready to exit the side of the block. After listening carefully and poking around underneath, I believe this noise is coming from the driver side catalytic converter. I can't say for sure, but I think that is where it is coming from. It sounds like somebody shaking marbles in a slightly padded tin can, changes slightly with RPM changes. I can't hear it while driving as the tires and the rest of the truck falling apart make too much noise. Motor runs fine, no CEL or other offensive things going on.
Is it possible that the cat's guts are rattling around inside? How will the truck run, codes, etc if I cut the possibly offending cat off and weld in a straight pipe? Legal disclaimer, truck is used only off road
FWIW, the cat in question appears to be OE LR parts. The cat on the passenger side looks different, maybe aftermarket, IDK, bought the truck a year ago and have been lucky enough not to have too many issues with it.
