I need some help. Driving home from work the other night everything was fine on the highway. Then the car shuttered for a second then ran fine. No lights or codes came up, at first I thought I hit something in the road. Then about 3 miles down the road it just shut off, engine just died still had battery power. Came to a stop and tried to restart and it just cranked but would not start. No CEL. When I turned the ignition off then back on the M and S lights on the dash were blinking in tandem. I checked the fuses and pulled the battery cables to try and reset the computer. Then tried to restart and the same thing. Towed it home, looked around all fluids are normal and no obvious signs anything is wrong. Still no CEL but plugged in the scanner anyways, no codes. Had a fresh battery, put that in and it started up and ran fine. Took it for a spin around the block and it ran and shifted fine. Let it sit in the driveway. Went in to eat dinner, came back to move it and it would not start, same thing even with with new battery. I did some searching and most of the time people are mentioning that when the M and S lights are blinking it will run in "limp mode", mine will not run at all. Any idea where to start? The only thing I did recently was just change the oil.

First off, thanks to all for your input and pointing me in the right direction. After reading through the RAVE I do believe the culprit is the CKP sensor. There is a detailed section just on the crankshaft position sensor which describes the symptoms I am having. I have one on order and am awaiting delivery. One additional question. The replacement looks quite straightforward. However in the RAVE they mention "The flywheel/ reluctor ring adaptions must be reset if the CKP sensor or the flywheel are changed." I have no idea what this means. In the section on replacement of the CKP sensor the last step after refitting is "Reset adaptions using TestBook." What if this is not done? I don't have Testbook so I have no way of doing this. Is this really necessary?

Alright, just wanted to thank everyone again for their input. Got the sensor replaced, wasn't bad at all. She is back and running great. One last question, and I may be a bit paranoid now. But I know the sensor is magnetized, when I removed the old sensor there was a small amount of fine metal shavings on the end. Is this ok/normal?
