the 30-30 and 7.62x39 are so close in performance. a little mods on your sks will make just as good a close range deer gun. a little heavier but cheap easy to get parts for and almost impossible to destroy, save the mony for a nice bolt action later a win 700 or 710 or one of the low cost weatherby vanguards.

I deer hunt with a 30-06 browning.

my buddy Bud hunted with a 30-30 his nick name was Bud the wounder (woon-der)
my spelling sucks
i got tired of blood trailing his deer for days.

4 guys chipped in and bought him a 30-06. for his 40th birthday.

no more woondings (woundings)

overall i agree the 308 (7.62) is a more versitile cartridge.

take him to the range, a larger hammer is no cure for bad aim. a well placed shot with even the smallest of cartrigdes can bring down a deer quickly. larger bores guns can make some people tighten up and flinch in anticipation of recoil, throwing off there shot. u can sit and shoot a .308 all day and get good with it as opposed to a hugh round u dread pulling the trigger on.

30/30 for,,,well,,,OLD SCHOOL IS ALWAYS COOL

Thank god!! I can't believe the following of these dam communist guns. An SKS deer hunting, please theres a reason the communist lost the cold war. there equipment is crap. Ya I know an ak-47 can shoot in the mud and all that it just can't hit much when compared to the remington/Winchester/stoner/Ruger ect. theres a reason many of those weapons have won camp perry. They are quality. OK that should just about do it. I'm starting to sound like Kyle.

Buy quility learn how to use it, keep it forever.

ive shot nationals at perry, my sks will never shoot as well as my m1A, but then i'm not dragging it into a swamp for chance to hit a deer at 25yards, the 7.62 shoots flat at 100 yards and in a cane break or thick under brush it makes a excelent rifle.
by the way mine will out shoot a enfield and some of the other old military rifles under 100 yards. if i had a to go to combat with a m16 or a sks, i'll take the sks any day.

talking about dreading to pull the trigger.prior to my Zambia trip in may 04 for Cape Buff i had to sight in my 458 win mag (mauser action custom rifle).
it literaly pushed my shoulder out of its socket every shot and this was with a shoulder pad on.
my buddy shot his Merkel 416 rigby it was painfull to say the least.
we dreaded every practice shot at the range.

In the Zambia bush after stalking the buff herd my buff took 7 shots to take down with 1 soft and 6 solids.
i never felt a thing and my shot placement was right on.
no bruises either.

funny what adrenalin can do for you.

Rob,
Your right on buy the 30-30. Its cheap, low recoil, east to mount optics on and great out to 100yards. For the buck its the best out there. They don't get a lot of fanfare because they aren't as cool looking as assault rifles and not as powerful as other rifles but they are rock solid and have stood the test of time.

.458 ? sissy gun try .50bmg. 700 grains 3000 fps. Just kidding I'm sure the 458 is much lighter than most 50s and probably kicks as bad or worse. :D

sissy you say

hey andy.
i have shot the 50 cal.as a mater of fact my wife bought me the Barrett 82A1 for xmas 03.
the barrel is recoiled.its less kick than my 12 gauge.my 12 year old shoots it no problem just prop him up behind the 33+ lbs of rifle and he does just fine.
the swarovski scope starts at 500yards so its difficult to find a place to shoot other than my local upstate ny fields.

im no sissy i like my firearms.

Actually the one I shoot is pretty kind too. I just like to tease these guys who brag about how bad ass their 300 ultra mag is.

Are you using Barrett ammo? I have had good luck with it so far. I'm happy to report my ammo is supplied thank god at $300 for 80 rounds

 There's no way I'd shoot a rifle that dislocated my shoulder every time I shot it. That's way too much pain for me.

I think you need to spend some time with a Mosin. They are an excellent accurate rifle and at $70-$100 you won't find a better deal. True, there are "better" rifles, but you will pay a heck of alot more.

if your not going for dangerous or realy big game there is no reason for you to have to shoot 458 every time.

i have shot a total of 12 rounds through it.5 flinching, painful, practice rounds and 7 in my buff.i never felt anything other than adrenalin when shooting in the bush all my 7 shots were in the boiler room not one flinch.

i dont plan on shooting it again untill 2008 in tanzania for free roaming lion if i get the permit.

hey andy
no i dont use barrett ammo.

i use the standard military and ive used AP even though its not recomended.last time i purchased 100 rds for 225.00.
i have only fired about 30 rounds through it and never sighted it in correctly due to the scope reticle starting at 500 yards.in my neck of the woods its dificult to find a 500 yard clearing without shooting across anothers property or road.

Tom I agree Mosin is a good rifle for the money. But I can buy a good match trigger for a 700 or 70 and have it in place in an hour. It may be the same with these other guns, I don't know. When you make a living with a gun (you may too, I don't know) you tend to get attached to what you are familar with. I was trained and became an armorer on 700s and m-4s/ar-15s. I ment no harm by my comments just believe in what I shoot. the Russians did very well with the sniper rifles in WWII. And I have absolute respect for them
But my hero Chuck Mawhinney shot American made guns and accumilated 103 confirmed and I believe another 200 or more probibles in SE Asia. I realize I'm off subject here just explaining where my loyalties came from.

Jim as far as the 50 bmg goes the military ball stuff is great. a lot cheaper. most ballistic data I've read has the 50 starting at a 500 meter zero. I'm lucky enough to train at a range with 100, 200 and 450 yard bays. for further out I have to change location. Come to Oregon and you can site it in here.

I'm a 30-06 fan as well. Dropped a few whitetails with my 1903 Springfield years ago. Not shots were around the 75 yard range. everyone dropped within a yards. Only deer I had run was when I wouned one with my shotgun. Last deer I took and last one I think I'll ever take. Such a bad experience that i don't think I can pull the trigger again on an animal. Maybe fowl though. I've put thousands of rounds through my 03 as I use to us it in CMP or DCM (was a long time ago, cannot remember the organization anymore) in 100 yard compeitions. And to top it off i'm a lefty. But that riffle/ammo combo is pretty accurate. Also shot this on the 1000 yard range at Ft. Dix years ago as well. That was a blast but very tough to hit those 6' targets. Really amazing what the M1A is capable at that yardage.

My father has dropped quite a few mule deer in Montana with his 03-06, all about 100 yards. But they also go out and shoot their 50bmg's at over a mile once in a while going for prarie dogs and antelope. Amazing what a 700 grain bullet will do to those things.
