I have been kicking the idea around of putting a diesel in my truck. I have a 130 and have a 3.5 carburated V8. It does OK and I actually have a 3.9 sitting on a stand in my garage that I was thinking of rebuilding. I don't think I could drop the $$ right now for a diesel. Have you done much work on the V8's? I am looking at cams right now and don't know which to go for, Isky Crane or original Land Rover. Any recommendations? Wish you were a little closer so I could stop by and pick your brain.

not sure about anything other than the land rover ones to be honest.... have to go with something different if you want any performance enhancement though.......
i have a 3.9 sitting here i just took out of a great divide edition range rover which is a low milage unit. The rover will be for sale in a week when fitted with its diesel engine for $11,500 but the 3.9 is up for grabs....yours for $650. comes with ALL ancilleries....... may be better for you than rebuilding yours..... . those 130's are big long beasts...... i always saw 110's get stuck in the uk let alone those ;o) all good fun though, let me know...... duncan.

Ps, will warranty all engines i sell !

would be $4500-$5000 depending on what i can get from my supliers.......mostly i bring 200 tdi's over as they are cheaper adn more reliable in my experience with only a few HP less......though getting the 300 is no prob......will ship directly to you !
anyway engines are all used but with warranty and less than 100K miles on them... for that i will supply all you need for the conversion other than odd hoses you will need to get locally..... bell housing adn spigot bush will come with as well as intercooler/radiator and new timing belt kit in box for you to fit, though you will need to get your own clutch too ( i can supply that if you want for extra cost)

call me if you like on 415 690 3636 adn we can talk more details..... I have a 200tdi sitting here waiting to go !!

yes, unfortunately chicago don is right... very involved..... tranny and other electrics ar ethe problem thoughi woudl suggest a little less than the figure he mentioned..... talking around the 12K mark(for example i just sold a 1996 disco 5 speed with a 300 tdi engine fitted for $14000, the whole thing !!)..... with that you would get options to switch to a manual tranny too..... to be honest i would suggest you go get an older vehicle though or sell yours and i will build you something from scratch based on a range rover chassis with your engine of choice and maybe a defender body if you wanted, tha tway you get the perfect vehicle for what you need...... let me know what sounds most interesting to you......

I may be a lurker here, but I'm active of d90 source.
Just wanted to put in the good word for Duncan. He is a stand up guy. I had him do some work on my 300 and he knows his stuff. I also saw one of his 200tdi in the shop that a friend of mine is buying. He not only has the parts but he is providing my friend with great tech support for a 200 conversion in Vermont.

Once again IMO a stand up guy.

Regards
Steve

just curious,

How much would it cost to have a 300tdi installed in a NAS 95 D1, manual transmission. Do you predominantly install the electronically controlled version of the 300?

Do factory TDIs come with the 1.4 TC or the 1.2?

i try to steer away from teh ecu versions...... rather the 200tdi than those...... just too much trouble in teh long run....trickier fitting and then looking after down the road....

call me if you need engines/transmissions, bell housings and other parts you need for conversions...

your manual D1 is about as easy as it gets for a conversion..... bell housing, spigot bush, clutch kit and engine mounting brackets on teh chassis.... that is about it in terms of parts..... me to do the conversion start to finnish including engine and all parts $9,000 for a 200 tdi $10,500 for the 300tdi. all work warrantied, i can put you in touch with other people who have land rovers i have converted if you want to hear about me from an independant source.....

i am on 415 690 3636

Duncan.

What are the emmissions-type repercussions of a diesel conversion? CA must be like DEQ in Oregon here, which is tough. Hate to chuck a V8 w/ less that 68k, but biodiesel is just too cool. A buddy at work has a couple old MBs and he brews his own for about $.65 per, after buying his cooker et al. Thanks

Yeah, been wondering about that... how old would my truck have to be in order to put a diesel in it and still LEGALLY register it?

Did the diesels come with a ZF auto behind them or were they all manuals? I was just wondering how it would hold up to the torque.

If so how much for a 200 or 300tdi and the parts needed to adapt it to the ZF.

This is a story of someone on another board, but he was able to get a his title changed to show the diesel just fine in CA. Emissions is another story and I'm not sure how it works down there.

In WA they have the same story. DMV will get you a new title to show it's diesel. Emissions in another story.
