Anyone else just see Mine That Bird come threading up through from the back?!

Late post, just got back in. That was awesome, replay was great. Some ponies love hugging and running that rail. All he did was click him and the horse just let loose. It was fun to watch. Did you see the replay of the race for the jockey in 2007 , horse ran similar pattern, except when passing the horse, he stayed more in the middle. Stroking ahead for more than a 6 length lead is just great. I miss being around the thoroughbreds and racing.

DVR'd it and just watched, and all I can say is DAMN. Love the longshot, especially on a relatively cheap horse.

It was hard to decide who to pull for...

I liked Friesan Fire since Larry Jones was also the trainer of 8 Bells and because he said he is retiring after this year. Then I liked General Quarters since Thomas MacCarthy is from Louisville and is a one man show (owner, trainer, etc) and its his only Derby. I also liked that Kent Desmoreaux was riding Hold Me Back.

I ended up betting on those three and put a $2 across the board bet on Mine That Bird since Calvin Borel had been winning all weekend and he won the Kentucky Oaks the day before. But if Dunkirk hadn't of slipped at the beginning I think he would have won.

I always love a good longshot victory! Great replay--Calvin Borel (Looziana boy Staci!) has some Derby magic

He is one of my favorite jockeys! I just adore him, every win is like the first race he won. He is so animated, when I saw him win I knew he was going to be wound.

I'm just glad there were no injuries this year

Oh me too! It just kills me when something happens to horses/riders during races. One of my first times exercising a horse at Louisiana Downs, I saw a horse just lose it over something and then he tried to leap the rail to get to the center, broke his leg badly, they brought the sheet out and put him down right there. I think I was around 13 and working for the Bafferts at the time. That image has always stayed with me.

Scary stuff. I've never been to Louisiana Downs...but my parents' best friends have a racing stable in LA and race at the Fairgrounds on occasion. I've never been into racing very much but I loved getting to tour the paddock with him before the race and sit in the owners box!! :)

I love the internet...I was just googling his horses. They ran at Evangeline Downs this weekend and placed second with one of their horses.

It is now owned by Harrah's. It is more like a casino with a side of racing now. I miss the way it used to be. I used to be vigilant about following the races and horses, but kiddos keep me busy and I check stuff out at night.
