Detroit problems

Last week I had gears and lockers (truetrac front, detroit rear) installed in my 99D1. This is my 3rd rear detroit and this one acts alot different and I think something is wrong. But since this is my first all wheel drive application I though I would ask some questions before I took it out and sent it back.

Its only when I make left turns that is pops alot. Right turns are very quiet and normal, but make a left turn and it pops, loud, hard and often.

Since its a complete "already put together" unit I dont see how it could be installed wrong and even if I did set up the gears wrong (dont think I did) the locker still should work normal.

Any advise?

Someone post up how their detroit works. The one in my jeep has never poped twice in the same turn. It is either locked or unlocked in a turn and if it locks, its locked all the way through the turn. The rover one violently locks and unlocks several times in the same turn but only in a left hand turn.

My detroit doesnt make consistent popping. Occasionally, it will clunk loud when making a change in turning. Sometimes when turning right and all of a sudden make a sharp left, it will pop and sound like I crapped out the ring gear. But, it seems to have gotten better once I added heavier gear oil. It is normal to hear a faint clicking noise when turning, but your situation seems to be worse and abnormal. I would remove it before you trash anything.

no pops, just small tick tick tick, hard to hear though. something isn't ride, get rid of it before it fails on you when you need it.

The direction on the Detroit tell you how to check if is working properly. Go through that exercise and call the Eaton (they bought out Trachtech)

Interesting...as I came to a stoplight today....after fitting driveshaft 3 of the year...and took a hard left with the Detroit...and heard a clunk like no normal. I mean...we all know of the normal driveline clunk...but this one was monumental.
Lets see where this goes..thanks for the hit..of thread that is.

Mine has been popping since the day I put it in 5 months ago. I called Eaton and they said it was normal. Clunks especially bad when turning in reverse. The first time I heard it, (and felt it) I thought that I ran over something. I have since got used to it. Real loud one, my last Detroit in my jeep never made any noise at all.

Let me know if Eaton tells you anything different, cause I am still not confident in it's longevity it is is popping and clanging and almost snapping all of the time.

I'm gonna give it the test of Hell and back...in about 6 months.....
Cause i've been there....and its hot and my barstool is waiting.
My ARB lasted about 6 months, before it got submarined, and toasted.....NEXT!!!

Actually...after it popped today...I got on the freeway, and ran it to about 80mph for an hour...then came back...stopped for a bit, then 75mph for 80 miles. HEY...if somethings going on my rig, it better happen on the road..rather than OFF the damn road. I test all limits!!

Mine's been in for something like four or five years now ... its almost silent moving forward, but clicks quietly when reversing and turning.

Something's rotten in Denmark.

Oh, and the TT / Detroit combination has worked well .... except that its a little on the exciting side when the road is really icy.

MMmmmmm and you upgraded at least your rear axles too, right?

Thanks for all the responses.

I am going to call Bill at GBR since I bought it from him first. Then I will call the Detroit guys if needed. I figured something was wrong. I also have a jeep on ton axles with detroits and they do pop on occasion but my rover poped more in one day then the jeep has poped in 7 years.

I will let you know what happens. Yes, I did upgrade rear axles.

I called Bill at GBR today and he gave me a couple checks to do but he did say that it sounded like something was wrong. I will keep everyone posted.

Jedi's: I did the gears too. 4:11 new bearings, seals and all that good stuff.
