Detroit+Stock Axles?

Does anyone run a rear Detroit locker with the stock axles in a 95 Discovery? I have 245/75 MTR's, and I am wondering if I would have to get heavy duty rear axle shafts to run a Detroit?

Thanks
Chris

Not a good idea, stockers won't hold up to the abuse of a Detroit. Either plan on carring a set of used axle or bite the bullet and put in the H.D. axles like most of us have done.

I think that alot of it has to do with how you drive as well.. If you're careful and don't use alot of gas pedal you would probably be OK. If your the type that likes to spin tires up muddy hills pedal to the floor your going to bust them pretty quick.. Of course those upgraded ones probably wouldn't last you that long either with that driving style.

I would say that you would probably want to upgrade them but, you don't have to do it right away if you can't afford it. Just be careful and keep in mind that those axles in there are almost 10 years old and that they will be under higher amounts of stress then before. Then drive smart.

First off, I have a DII, but the same theory applies.

While not reccommended, I drove on stock axle shafts for over a year with a Detroit. However, I was conscious of it and drove accordingly.

I am pretty easy on the gas. I am planning on upgrading the axles somewhere down the road, so I might hold off for a little while and just do it all at one time. Thanks for the advice.

My emphasis added below. how many people do you know that have broken the 24 spline GBR (maxidrive) rear axles, and under what circumstances?

I would boil it down to driving style honestly. My brother ran 36s on his D90 with stock axles a Detroit for about a month until he get Moser axles. After we pulled the axles they had just regular wear. Be he didn't raise holy hell either. He was careful on road and off.

I've got a 95 with detroit and Stock for probably a year now (kinda forget sometimes when I did it) I drive with mechanical respect. No issues to report

IF you break an axle it will more than likely break the DL too.

GBR 24 spline REARS are functionally indestructable in a disco. Fronts are an entirely different matter.

If it matters I plan to run a DL in a stock salisbury, but salisbury detroits don't break with axle breaks like the rover unit.

I ran stock axles with a detroit for about a year with 33" AT's in my D2. I was cautious, soemtimes. I never had an issue. i eventually changed to HD axles when i put on my Swampers and redid my gearing.

Ron,

The DL in a sals will break if you snap an axle :(

Just had a buddy break a rear axle on his sals with a DL and it busted the DL.

Pretty much the point I was trying to make a couple of posts up.

Were you asking me a question or just using my post as an example? And yes, I have seen people break all sorts of crap when they do the "old floor it and go" driving style.

I was asking you a question. You wrote that with a heavy foot HD axles won't last long. I ASSumed you meant the MD axles, as those are by far the most popular axle upgrade for these trucks.

So who has broken them?

Call up Bill , there have been plenty broken. Some have had the spline strip off as well....

I have talked to Bill. I've been into LRs and these internet BBSs for years now, and I just don't remember anyone complaining of breaking those. I vaguely remember someone on the D90 list twisting some splines, but I'm talking about breakage like you get with the stock axles when you look at them funny--you know what I mean--the loud snap, followed by you undoing the drive flange bolts and the flange falling off in your hand.

Yeah , Alan Dobbs broke one or two I think and a couple other Defender boys with biggish tars... Ask around over on Pirates , I am sure you will get some hits.. Personally I have nuked a couple sets of flanges. Not to the point of stopping but it wasnt far out in the future.....
